On all major platforms.
Google does a new step towards a password-free future: the account login form now supports passkeys. It is a more secure alternative to passwords that uses a physical device to generate and transmit a cryptographic key to a website or application. It is enough to unlock the smartphone with a passcode or Face ID to log into a Google account on a computer or other device.
Previously, Google, Apple, Microsoft and other companies have already Deal about participation in FIDO Alliance. In fact, this is an agreement that gives access to passkeys on any system. Thanks to this, users with an Android smartphone and a Mac will be able to use the technology - just like the owners of the iPhone and Chromebook.
After agreeing to use passkeys, Google will offer to use them for any actions that require additional verification. Passkeys can be stored on smartphones with iOS 16 or Android 9, and transferred via compatible services like iCloud.
You can create an access key for your account by
this link (but it seems that the feature is not yet available for all accounts). In the future, in the settings of your Google account, you can withdraw consent to the use of passkeys - for example, if you lose your smartphone. For now, Google is leaving the standard sign-in options available, but it looks like it's hoping to make passkeys the only authentication method in the future.
