7 DIY Natural Dog Treats
Miscellaneous / / April 16, 2023
Delight your pet with treats without harmful additives.
Things to keep in mind when making your own dog treats
- First, make sure your pet is not allergic to any of the ingredients in the treat. If in doubt, consult your veterinarian.
- Consider the size of the animal. For large breeds, you can make large pieces, for small - slightly less.
- Homemade treats are made from natural ingredients without the use of preservatives. Therefore, store treats in the refrigerator for no more than two weeks. Paper bags or plastic containers are suitable for this.
- Remember that treats are a dessert, not a main meal. Feed them to your pet no more than once a day. For encouragement during training cook them in small cubes.
1. Cookies "Meat balls"
What you need
- 100 g of veal or beef;
- 1 egg white;
- 50 g rice flour + for sprinkling.
How to do
Grind the meat to a puree state with a blender. Add egg protein and mix thoroughly. Then add flour and use a blender to turn everything into a homogeneous mass.
Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lightly dust the top with flour.
Roll the meat into balls the size of a cherry. So that the dough does not stick to your hands, you can periodically moisten them with water. Put the blanks on a baking sheet and flatten them slightly with your finger.
Place the balls in the oven and bake for 10 minutes. Then reduce the temperature to 170 degrees and cook for another 30 minutes.
Remove the dog treat from the oven and let it cool completely.
2. Dried beef liver
What you need
- 500 g beef liver.
How to do
soak raw liver in cold water for 1-2 hours. Change fluid periodically as it becomes cloudy. This procedure will help to make the meat softer and get rid of the specific smell.
Put the offal in a pot of boiling water. Simmer for 3-4 minutes, then remove and place on a cutting board. After this treatment, the liver will be easier to cut.
With a sharp knife, divide the liver into strips 1 cm thick (you can make any length and width). Another option is to cut the meat into 1.5 x 1.5 cm cubes. They are great for dog training. For small breeds, you can make smaller blanks.
Preheat the oven to 70-80 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Put the liver on it in one layer.
Send the baking sheet to the oven. After 15 minutes, open the door a couple of centimeters and leave it in this position until the end of cooking. To ensure that the pieces dry evenly and do not burn, turn them over about once every 30 minutes.
Cooking time depends on the size of the pieces. Small training cubes will be ready in about an hour. They should be dry on the outside and soft on the inside. Beef strips should be firm and crispy for the dog to chew on. They will take about 4 hours.
Remove the finished treats from the oven and let them cool completely. Put in a paper bag and put away fridge.
3. Dried lung plates
What you need
- 1 kg of beef or lamb lung;
- vegetable oil for lubrication.
How to do
wash lung under running water and cut into slices 1–1.5 cm thick. The process will go easier if the product is slightly frozen.
Preheat the oven to 120 degrees by turning on the "Convection" mode. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and grease it with vegetable oil. Lay on top of the blanks in one layer.
Put the baking sheet in the oven and dry for 1-1.5 hours. If there is no "Convection" mode, leave the door ajar a couple of centimeters.
If you want a crunchier treat, after 1 hour reduce the temperature to 50-60 degrees and cook the light one for another 3 hours.
After drying, transfer the meat to a plate and let it cool completely.
4. Dried chicken hearts
What you need
- 500 g chicken hearts.
How to do
wash hearts under running water. Cut them into 2, 4 or 6 pieces depending on how big you want the finished treat to be.
Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil and place the hearts on it in a single layer.
Send the baking sheet to the oven. Bake the meat for 10 minutes, then remove.
During the cooking process, hearts release a lot of unnecessary fat. Line a baking sheet with clean foil and put the blanks on it in one layer. Pat them dry with a paper towel. Turn the oven down to 100 degrees and put in a dog treat. Bake another 20 minutes.
If the hearts again release a lot of fat, repeat the procedure with clean foil. Then cook offal at 100 degrees for another 35 minutes.
Remove the treat from the oven, transfer to a plate and let it cool completely.
5. Meat sticks with oatmeal
What you need
- 200 g of meat (chicken, turkey, rabbit or beef);
- 50 g of oatmeal;
- 1 egg;
- vegetable oil for lubrication.
How to do
Grind the meat with a blender to a puree consistency. Add cereal and egg. Mix the ingredients thoroughly with a spoon. Cover the bowl with cling film and refrigerate for 20 minutes to let the oatmeal swell and become soft. Then blender turn all the components into a homogeneous mass.
Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil and brush with vegetable oil. Transfer the mince to a pastry bag. Instead, you can use a small plastic bag, from which you need to cut off the corner. Squeeze the meat with sausages over the entire length of the baking sheet. Send to bake for 20 minutes.
Remove the dog treat from the oven and transfer to a plate. Cut the blanks into sticks or small medallions. Let them cool completely.
6. Meat plates with buckwheat flakes
What you need
- 130 g of meat (chicken, turkey, rabbit or beef). You can take one kind or make a mixture.
- 1 egg.
- 1.5 st. spoons of buckwheat flakes.
- vegetable oil for lubrication.
How to do
Grind the meat with a blender to a puree state. Add egg and cereal to minced meat. Mix everything with a fork or spoon. Leave the mixture at room temperature for 10 minutes to buckwheat saturated with moisture and became soft.
Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and grease it with vegetable oil. Put the minced meat on top and roll it into a layer 0.5 cm thick with a spoon.
Bake the meat layer for 10 minutes. Then lower the temperature and cook the treat for another 1 hour.
Take the tray out of the oven. Transfer the workpiece to a plate or board. Cut with a knife or scissors into strips of the desired size and cool them.
7. Rice cookies with liver
What you need
- 100 g boiled liver (beef, turkey or chicken);
- 1 egg white;
- 5 st. spoons of rice flour;
- 2 tbsp. spoons of water;
- vegetable oil for lubrication.
How to do
Grind the liver on a fine grater. Add egg white to it and mix thoroughly.
Gradually add rice flour to the egg-meat mixture, combining all the ingredients with a spoon. Then add water and mix thoroughly again. Make a ball out of the mixture and leave for half an hour at room temperature.
Preheat oven to 125 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, grease it with vegetable oil. Put the meat dough on top and roll it into a layer 0.5–1 cm thick. Cut the workpiece into squares of the desired size.
Place the treat in the oven and bake for 10 minutes. Then reduce the temperature to 90 degrees and cook the cookies for another 10 minutes.
Take out the baking sheet, break the layer into squares along the cut line. Bake the blanks for another 10 minutes at 90 degrees. Then turn off the oven and leave the treat inside for 15 minutes.
Transfer the cookies to a plate and let them cool completely.
