Minecraft fans helped save a 13th-century Spanish cathedral

The good news we deserve.
From time to time there is news about how video game fans unite for good deeds outside the gaming world. Often this is expressed in charity streams, in which bloggers entertain viewers and help raise money for various foundations. But Spanish Minecraft fans have shown that you don't have to have millions of subscribers to make the world a better place.
The heroes of the day are the creators of the Minecraftéate channel, which showcases replicas of Spanish architecture in Minecraft. It is hosted by only two people: Gabriel Garcia, who has been into Minecraft for 8 years and loves to recreate real buildings in the game, and Nora Pulido, who prepares scripts and voices them for videos.
In 2021, after a video about one of the Spanish cathedrals was released on the channel, restorers of the Church of Santiago Apostle in Villamorone turned to YouTubers. They asked to tell about this architectural monument of the XIII century, which needs to be saved.
Minecraftéate did not disappoint and released a video in which they talked about crowdfunding. Here he is:
The video has a little over 3 thousand views, which is not much by YouTube standards. But the video was picked up by the media, both local and foreign, and a discussion began on thematic forums. And the campaign had a chance.
The initial goal of the collection was 15,000 euros for a basic restoration, while a full restoration required 25,000 euros. Thanks to Minecraftéate, the project managed to raise over 30 thousand, and the work began.
The story caused such a buzz that game developer Mojang posted the first-ever Spanish-language video on Minecraft's official YouTube channel. This is a small documentary about the project, in which you can see its first fruits: the transformed interior of the cathedral. There is still a lot of work ahead, but now nothing threatens the monument. The video is in Spanish, but automatic translation of subtitles is supported.
This story shows once again that video games can be more than just a way to relax and have fun. They create around themselves communities whose ideas go beyond the virtual world.
