In Egypt, found the most ancient and "complete" mummy

Archaeologists have discovered in Egypt previously unknown tombs dating back to the period of the Old Kingdom. One of them contained an ancient mummy.

Excavations are carried out on the territory of the Saqqara necropolis, where the ancient pyramid of Djoser is also located. The limestone sarcophagus with the mummy was at the bottom of a burial shaft 15 meters deep. Judging by the inscriptions on its upper part, the man belonged to a noble family, his name was Gekashepes, and he lived and died 4,300 years ago. Around the building were stone vessels.

Head of the Archaeological Mission Zahi Hawass told Reuters that this is the oldest and most "complete" mummy found in Egypt at the moment.

The tombs belong to the V and VI dynasties of Ancient Egypt. And Gekashepes was not the only person found during the excavations.

The most important tomb belongs to the high-ranking official Khnumjedef. He is also called the overseer of the nobility and the priest of the last king of the 5th dynasty. This tomb is decorated with scenes from everyday life.

The second largest tomb belonged to Mary, who, apparently, was the keeper of secrets and assistant to the "great leader of the palace." Numerous carved statues made of wood and stone have also been found.

The Pyramid of Djoser in the Saqqara necropolis is considered one of the largest burial complexes in the world. It covers an area of ​​more than 10 kilometers. It was built 4,700 years ago. Mummified lions and even 2,600-year-old halloumi cheese have already been found during excavations in this area. Sand walls hide many more ancient secrets, archaeologists believe.
