In 2022, the trends of previous years have remained in force. There were horror films with social overtones, Netflix spent huge money luring famous directors, and movie comics collected big box office. But all this has nothing to do with the picture that impressed us the most.
The best film of 2022 Lifehacker considers "Banshee of Inisherina». This is a quiet masterpiece by Martin McDonagh, who finally made a movie about Ireland. Two friends, Colm and Padraik, are fighting so hard that one forbids the other from approaching him. And he sets a condition: Colm will cut off his finger if a former friend tries to talk to him.
Death, always present somewhere nearby, forces one to abandon meaningless conversations for the sake of a higher goal - Colm wants to write music that will remain after him. Padraik can't understand why this is necessary, if it's much more fun to drink beer with a friend. Both heroes are right, so both are unhappy.
And so Martin McDonagh combines tragedy (the loss of a friend in a small village dooms a person to loneliness) and comedy (comrades swear too funny).
Another notable nominee for Best Film of the Year is "All Quiet on the Western Frontfrom Netflix. The classic novel by Erich Maria Remarque is difficult to film. But it turned out that they can be inspired. Edward Berger (creator of Your Honor and Patrick Melrose) and his team wrote the script, which doesn't have many crossovers with the original. The main thing that remains of the novel is humanism and compassion for all participants in the battles.
And here is the pictureForgiven' came out unnoticed. After a long pause, John Michael McDonagh's first film tells the story of the British, forced to accept the rules of the Africans during a tourist trip. The film turned out to be bright, interesting, but too heterogeneous. He definitely deserves attention.
Like the picturebardo”, which can be called the epic return of Alejandro González Iñárritu. The Mexican director analyzed his actions and fears against the backdrop of surreal scenery. This movie was worth waiting for 7 years.
Another classic of world cinema, David Cronenberg, surprised with the film "Crimes of the future» - about surgery as an art. His characters do not experience pain, watch the growth of new organs and try to understand the limits of what is acceptable.
«Pinocchio Guillermo del Toro"turned out to be an interesting interpretation of a classic fairy tale. This is an almost perfect picture, which is hardly worth showing to children.
Horror "The Barbarian" told the story of a woman who accidentally got into a house where terrible events take place. The plot is rather hackneyed, but the presentation is spectacular: excellent camera work makes the film interesting. Another bright horror - "Gender masculine"- can be called a feminist anthem. Not always scary, but witty.
Long-awaited "Avatar: Path of Water” turned out to be very beautiful and long. Considering that the plot is very predictable here, the timing greatly influenced the perception of the picture. This is by far the loudest premiere of the year, but there are hardly any people who are ready to watch this film twice.
New "Batman” turned out to be a good picture, albeit a little tightened. Obviously, it can serve as the basis for a new reboot of the franchise.
Fans of mythical stories appreciated the film "Varangian" - another appeal to the theme of the Vikings, this time from Robert Eggers ("Lighthouse"). An expensive picture pleases with bright fights and a mystical atmosphere, but tires with a predictable plot.
Released in summergray man”turned out to be a mixture of Fast and Furious and Bond. The Russo brothers, accustomed to Marvel adaptations, managed to create a boring and visually pleasing picture - it will not disappoint, but you will not want to revise it.
Another hilarious movie that shows (and makes fun of) the difficult life of a hitman is Faster than a Bullet. In spirit, it resembles "Burn After Reading" - an absurd story easily entertains the viewer.
