Miscellaneous / / April 05, 2023
It can be added to a website, a picture, a fragment in the text, and even another document.
The Microsoft Word Processor supports a hyperlink feature that allows you to insert various links: to web pages, files, a specific place in the text, another document, or email. Next, we will consider them, and also figure out how to remove the added links.
How to make an automatic link in Word
The easiest way to add a link is to simply type or paste the address to the desired page or file. Since Word automatically recognizes the URL, the address will immediately turn into a link. It won't look very pretty, but when you need to show the full URL or just don't want to bother, this is the best option.
Just paste the link by copying from the address bar of the browser, or manually enter the address from the keyboard, starting with www.
Press Space or Enter and the text will turn into an underlined and blue highlighted hyperlink. By the way, when you press Ctrl + Z, it will again become plain text. This is in case you need to specify the site address without a link.
How to link in Word to a web page or file
The link does not have to be inserted directly, it can be assigned to any word or phrase in the text, as well as a picture. So it will be more correct, more beautiful and more understandable for the reader. The process itself is not much more complicated.
Select the desired word and on the "Insert" tab, click "Links" → "Link", or better, just press the Ctrl + K combination on the keyboard.
In the window that opens, in the "Address" field, paste the URL of the web page or file.
The selected word will become underlined and turn blue. Now, by clicking on it with the Ctrl key pressed, the link will open in the browser.
How to make a link to a place in the text in Word
Similar to pages on the web, you can add links to sheets and even specific fragments in a document. This can be useful when compiling term papers and theses, as well as other large files with a large number of sections. To implement this, you can use table of contents or bookmarks.
Place the cursor where you want to link to, and on the Insert tab, click Links → Bookmark.
Enter a name that is easy to understand for the bookmark and click Add.
Now select the word that you want to make a link, press Ctrl + K, and then click "Place in the document", expand the list of bookmarks and select the one you need.
After that, by clicking on the specified word while holding down Ctrl, Word will instantly go to the place in text, which you bookmarked.
How to link to another document in Word
By the same principle, other Word documents can be used as a link object. This method is useful for large jobs that contain multiple files at once and can save time when interacting with them.
Still select the word or phrase and press Ctrl + K.
Select Document Word in the file list.
Now, if you hold down Ctrl and click on the link, the specified document will open.
How to link to an email in Word
Another option for using links is to provide feedback to readers of your document. By clicking on such a link, the user will automatically open the creation of a new letter with a given subject in mail client default.
Highlight the word you want to make a link and press Ctrl + K.
Click "Email", enter an email address (don't worry, mailto: will be added to the front), a subject line, and click OK.
After that, by clicking on the link, the reader will be able to write you a letter and give feedback.
How to remove a link in Word
The reverse process is much simpler and, remarkably, the same for links of any type.
Highlight the word or phrase with the link, and then right-click and select "Remove Hyperlink" from the context menu. Or just press Ctrl + Shift + F9 on your keyboard. By the way, if you select all the text (Ctrl + A) and then use this keyboard shortcut, then Word will remove all links in the document.
After removing the link, the fragment will turn into plain text.
