Chrome will start hibernating tabs to free up memory
Miscellaneous / / April 04, 2023
Soon the browser will stop taking all the resources of your computer.
Although Google is constantly improving Chrome and adding new features to it, the main problem of the browser is its gluttony. If you do not keep track of the number of open tabs, the application may well use all available memory. But it looks like Google has finally noticed user complaints. Chrome Canary is testing Memory Saver and Battery Saver modes.
The first hibernates unused tabs to free up RAM. Such tabs stop updating, and when you hover over them, you will see how many resources were saved thanks to Memory Saver. If you switch to a frozen tab, it will reactivate.
The mode can be turned on or off thanks to the button to the right of the search bar, and you can also set exceptions for sites. For example, so that the browser does not freeze YouTube with background music or a tracker Pomodoro.
Battery Saver will allow you to increase the autonomy of laptops, sacrificing smooth scrolling, visual effects and data refresh in the background.
So far, both of these features are only available in Canary, and the corresponding checkboxes need to be enabled manually. A public release is probably not to be expected before Chrome 109, due out at the end of December.
