Noble manners in a proletarian entourage. Why watch the Black Spring series about teenagers and justice
Miscellaneous / / April 04, 2023
Perhaps this is the best Russian series of 2022.
On November 16, the first episode of the Black Spring series was released on the Start streaming service. The story of teenagers who decide to revive the tradition of duels is impressive and frightening. Starring Gleb Kalyuzhny ("Vampires of the Middle Band"), Artyom Koshman ("I'm Not Kidding"), Anastasia Krasovskaya ("Difficult Teens"). Also on the screen appear Nikolai Fomenko ("Orphan of Kazan") and Alexander Yatsenko ("Arrhythmia").
The showrunners were Sergei Tamaraev (Winter Way) and Lyubov Lvova (Preobrazhensky) - they wrote the script and directed the series.
Egor Melenin, nicknamed Mel, is in love with his classmate Angela and is fascinated by the history of duels. But together with friends, he behaves as is customary in a teenage company: he drinks beer, does not give up drugs. One day, a director comes to a provincial town for a few days, filming an advertisement for a local cafe. During the casting, he seduces Angela. Having learned about this, Mel invites the director to go to a duel - with seconds and pistols. This is how a closed club appears, whose members are subject to strict rules and are distinguished by a heightened sense of justice and hatred of dishonor.
Teenagers and Justice
Youthful maximalism does not allow you to come to terms with how the world works. Not finding justice around them, teenagers decide to create it themselves. Noble duels just come to hand, but fit perfectly on the minds of schoolchildren.
"Black Spring" perfectly shows the difference between young men who believe in ideals (even if they are strange), and adults who have taken the injustice of the world for granted.
Despite the craving for justice, teenagers calmly commit acts that they themselves might call immoral. Beating your father to steal guns, sell drugs, provoke conflicts with everyone you meet - morality is blurred and not described by a specific code. If the characters in The Boondock Saints are ridding the world of bad people in the name of the Christian faith (which they understand in their own way), then the guys in Black Spring cannot explain this or that action. They have an intuitive sense of justice.
Violence becomes not only a way to prove one's case, but also a separate language - it differs from the generally accepted one. The director invited to the duel perceives what is happening to the last as a conversation with an unfamiliar tribe - he cannot believe what he hears.
Such a different province
The first episode does not mention the place where the events unfold. Obviously, this is a collective image of the province, associated with hopelessness among adults and the desire to leave among adolescents.
An abandoned plane, a dirty private sector, corruption schemes - all the characteristic attributes are collected. Teenagers can easily communicate with a drug addict who "sits on a gloomy" simply because for them this is an ordinary person.
The classic provincial melancholy is conveyed in all possible ways, a special atmosphere appears from the very first seconds and does not disappear anywhere throughout the first series.
Interesting camera work
Cameraman Mikhail Khursevich ("Rastorguev", "Kitoboy") creates the most diverse scenes. Despite the devastation surrounding the characters, the series is replete with beautiful shots. For contrast, different techniques are used - an abundance of close-ups, beautiful landscapes, panoramas.
There are practically no static frames in the series - a hand-held camera adds dynamics to the action and enlivens what is happening. The scene that ends the first episode, in general, pulls for an award for cinematography.
living language
From the first minutes, Black Spring pleases with its approach to the language. Teenagers speak like teenagers, and adults like adults - unfortunately, this rarely happens in Russian TV shows. Mat, tongue-tied, parasitic words, chewing sounds - because of this, the characters are perceived as living people.
Some people may be confused by individual phrases (like “masons-suckers”), but 17-year-olds do not often use complex speech structures. Mel stands out from his friends because of his passion for classical literature - well-read has affected his language, but in difficult situations he breaks down into banal abuse.
The perfect cast
In the first episode, there is not a single character who is knocked out of the plot and seems foreign. Of course, this is the merit of the writers, but the actors who embody the images work at an incredible level. Gleb Kalyuzhny has long been talked about as a rising star, but his performance in Black Spring takes him to a whole new level. His hero is a mixture of Vincent Cassel from "Hatred" and diligent students from the "Society of Dead Poets". And the actor copes with a difficult image.
Perhaps other teenage heroes fade a little against the background of Kalyuzhny's character, but at least they do not spoil anything. The appearance of more status actors makes the series brighter. Nikolai Fomenko, in the image of a provincial authority, even looks too natural, and drunk Alexander Yatsenko, talking about the importance of moving to St. Petersburg, only due to acting skills creates one of the most striking scenes of the first episode.
good soundtrack
In recent years, the authors of domestic TV series are increasingly paying attention to the unobvious heroes of Russian pop music, and this is a great trend. The song "My Soul" by the performer Lilu45 is used as the soundtrack of "Black Spring". In isolation from the series, the song can hardly be called brilliant, but it fits so well on the frames that it immediately becomes the perfect accompaniment.
In general, everything related to sound in Black Spring is performed at the highest level - from wind-blown replicas to songs. In one of the scenes, a musician in a provincial bar with a characteristic accent sings “here is a beautyful world, wonderful life” - and it looks as natural as possible.
The first episode of "Black Spring" is beautiful - an excellent detailed script is implemented by a team of professionals, so it's very interesting to look at the characters. Despite the insane melancholy that accompanies each frame, this is not a "darkness" - rather an honest look at the province.
All the splendor of the first episode rests on one fear - will it be possible to keep the whole season at this level? 7 episodes are planned, and they are unlikely to be as intense as the debut. But even if the sequel turns out to be not so bright, then even a separate first episode deserves viewing - it can also be perceived as an excellent average meter.
