Corning has officially unveiled the second generation of its most durable smartphone screen protector yet. When developing Gorilla Glass Victus 2, the main goal was to increase protection when falling on asphalt, concrete and other hard, rough surfaces.
The new glass was tested on a special installation that accelerates the smartphone and hits it on a stone block with sandpaper. A piece of sandpaper simulates the unevenness of the material, due to which the impact is concentrated on a small area, and not on the entire surface of the glass. Because of this, ordinary aluminosilicate glass does not withstand and cracks, while Gorilla Glass Victus 2 remains intact. It looks something like this:
Tests with blocks of real materials show that the new glass can survive a drop from a height of a meter (thigh level) onto a cement floor - or from two meters onto ordinary asphalt.
The manufacturer also claims that while increasing the strength of the glass, it was possible to maintain its resistance to scratches - which is especially important, given that new smartphones are covered with glass on the back too, so keys in your pocket can damage the device on both sides.
Corning says smartphones with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 will be available in the coming months, but reveals which models will be first.
