How to cover thuja for the winter
Miscellaneous / / April 03, 2023
Additional protection will help the plant survive even severe cold.
Young conifers no more than 4–5 years old are especially in need of shelter. They may not survive frosts, strong winds and get sunburned in early spring. Adult thujas are more resistant to cold and winter quite successfully even in harsh conditions. Most often they are covered to protect the crown from deformation during heavy snowfalls, as well as from the bright spring sun that can burn the needles.
When to cover thuja
It is necessary to have time to carry out the work before the snow falls and stable frosts come. Tui they begin to cover when the temperature outside the window drops below +4 degrees and the weather forecast does not promise sharp warming. In the middle lane, such conditions occur from late October to mid-November, in the northern regions sometimes even earlier than these dates. In any case, focus not on the calendar, but on the promises of weather forecasters.
How to cover thuja for the winter
Take twine, garden or ordinary bandage and wrap the thuja in a spiral, bending the side branches to the main trunk. First, move from the bottom up, and then, reaching the crown, from the top down. If the plant is tall, use a ladder. You don't need to tie the branches too tightly, they should be a little loose.
Throw non-woven material on the top of the thuja. Agrofibre must match the height of the tree and cover it completely to the ground.
Burlap can be used to cover undersized or young plants. As a rule, the footage of such material is small, so it is difficult for them to cover a high thuja.
Fasten the covering material along the entire height of the plant. To do this, wrap the thuja rope from the bottom up, moving in a spiral.
Thus, the thuja will be completely ready for wintering and will survive any vagaries of nature.
