Why you shouldn't wash floors with a towel
Miscellaneous / / April 03, 2023
No, it's not that it leaves behind a bunch of villi.
It is believed that by washing the floors with a towel, you can lose family happiness and well-being. You can also hear that by squeezing dirty water out of such a rag, a person incurs financial difficulties. As in many other cases, the roots of this superstition go back to ancient times, when people treated many household items differently.
Among the Slavic peoples, it was customary to give a towel for a wedding. Also it applied in various ceremonies for homelands and christenings, funerals and commemorations, and sometimes served as a talisman. Towels consecrated for Easter were placed on the door or outside the window to protect against thunderstorms. Icons were decorated with a towel, and it could also be hung on a cross - for example, on a grave.
As a result, contact with holy objects and participation in rituals automatically made a piece of cloth a sacred object.
It is not surprising that using it to wash floors was considered, if not sacrilege, then at least dangerous undertaking: you will surely anger or insult some supernatural being and bring it on trouble yourself.
In the modern world, the towel has lost its sacred properties. But since the human brain is imprisoned for the search for dangers - real or imaginary - superstition has survived to this day.
At the same time, there is no rational reason to be afraid of bad consequences. Therefore, you can safely use an old towel for mopping. In the end, your financial well-being will even benefit a little from this: you won’t have to spend money on special floor rags.
