Windows 11 update slows down the SSD of computers. There is a solution
Miscellaneous / / April 03, 2023
Not only the speed of copying files suffers, but also performance.
Windows 11 users are complaining about SSD slowdowns after installing the March security patch KB5023706. This causes a serious drop in performance, blue screens of death and errors during the installation of the update itself are also not uncommon.
Although on the Microsoft support page claimsthat owners of home PCs or employees of small companies are unlikely to encounter this problem, posts Reddit says otherwise. According to user reports, SSD slowdown affects computer boot, file copy time, and gaming performance: xzombiekiss notesthat the game, which previously worked without problems, began to freeze regularly after the update.
Laptops suffer too. There are even references to specific models: Lenovo Legion 5 And HP Omen 16, and in the second case, the time not only for copying data, but also for loading the device increased: the author calculated that it increased from the usual 14 seconds to 31 seconds. How could he check it? It's simple: rolling back the update solved the problem.
Lifehacker talked about how to remove a Windows update in separate article. If for some reason this cannot be done (for example, for security reasons on corporate PCs), Microsoft recommends using copy tools that do not involve cache storage. To do this, you can use the following commands:
- robocopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder somefile.img /J
- xcopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder /J
Microsoft has not yet specified when this issue will be fixed. If you haven't installed the latest patch yet, you probably shouldn't rush to update.
