Study: Cats use purrs to manipulate people
Miscellaneous / / April 03, 2023
It is generally accepted that cats purr with pleasure. However, they can also use their characteristic vibrations to manipulate people, told Science Focus, a researcher at the University of Nottingham (UK) Lauren Finkey.
She notes that the complex biology of cats is a hotbed of controversy among scientists. For example, there is a theory that purring comes from a rush of blood and occurs regardless of the desire of the animal. However, now there is evidence that the characteristic sound still comes from the larynx and can be controlled.
Study Scientists from the University of Sussex (UK) even showed that cats are able to change the tone of their purr depending on the situation. For example, when they beg for food, they use higher frequency sounds.
The purring of hungry cats shares common sound signatures with those of crying babies.

Cats use meowing when begging for food less often, as they consider purring more acceptable to humans, scientists say. That is, they understand that with a rude demand they can be left without food, and with a polite request, they can get everything they want.
Besides, cats may use purr when distressed or injured. This is the complete opposite of joy, but to the human ear it still sounds like a manifestation of a form of pleasure.
βIt is believed that in certain situations, cats may purr in an attempt to soothe themselves, which can help them relieve pain, and it can also be a request for help,β Finca said.
At the same time, often in such situations, the behavior and body language of cats seem to say that they should not be touched and left alone, the expert concludes.
