Basically, it's just a very smart camera.
Developed in 1921, the polygraph is still considered a lie detector in some countries, although research confirmedthat it can only measure stress levels. Xiaomi has come up with a different method to detect when a person is lying.
How informs Chinese edition of ITHome, Xiaomi received a patent for lie detection technology, as well as related devices, including mobile terminals and data storage. In other words, this is a technology that can be used in mobile technology - a separate gadget or, say, a smartphone.
The basis of such a lie detector will be a tilt-and-turn camera with a telephoto lens, which will be able to monitor the face and pupils of the person being tested. The algorithm will check the movement of the pupils and their expansion with patterns indicating that a person is lying.
The fact that lying affects eye movements and pupil dilation has been known before. According to one of researchWhen a person lies, the diameter of his pupils expands by 4-8% of the original size. Also, the liar begins to blink up to 8 times.
The Xiaomi patent shows that these physiological lie indicators can be captured using a camera and a special algorithm. Now it only remains to confirm that such a device will not repeat the fate of the polygraph and will really be able to detect lies, not stress.
