Lenovo brought to MWC 2023 an interesting concept laptop, which was first shown at the end of last year. In normal mode, it's a standard ThinkBook ultrabook with a 12.7-inch 4:3 aspect ratio display.
However, if you press a small switch on the right side of the case, you will hear the whirring of motors, which will begin to increase the height of the display. This mechanism literally pulls the on-screen panel out from under the keyboard.
The process of increasing the size is quite slow, note journalists. Full disclosure takes just over 10 seconds, and it produces a 15.3-inch display with an 8:9 aspect ratio.
In terms of resolution, it's 2024 x 1604 pixels in normal mode and 2024 x 2368 pixels in expanded mode when the screen is fully enlarged. The panel itself is manufactured by Sharp. The resource of the mechanism is 20-30 thousand cycles.
Lenovo believes that such an unusual high display can be useful for both office workers and programmers, allowing you to see a larger array of spreadsheet cells or more lines of code. Also, nothing prevents using such a screen to simultaneously display two windows on top of each other.
So far, this is only a prototype for demonstrating the technology. It is far from the release, as evidenced by the slow process of unfolding the panel, and the presence of a small screen crease. Nevertheless, Lenovo sees the future of the laptop industry in such expanding screens, and plans to further develop them. What do you think of this technology?
