Already this week, an asteroid with a diameter of 40 to 95 meters (55 meters on average) will fly between the Earth and the Moon at a speed of 27,400 km/h.
Asteroid 2023 DZ2 was discovered by astronomers at the Spanish La Palma Observatory on February 27. Although it is classified as a near-Earth object, it does not pose a danger: it will fly at a distance of more than 174 thousand kilometers from the Earth, which is slightly less than half the distance between the planet and the Moon. From the list of potentially dangerous removed 21 March.
Asteroids of this size do not often fly close to Earth - usually about once a decade. Therefore, 2023 DZ2 has attracted the attention of scientists who will be able to collect new data, including to develop a system for protecting the planet in case asteroids with a more dangerous trajectory appear.
It can be observed at night from March 25 to March 26, it will be brightest and closest at about 2:20 Moscow time. It will be best seen from Southeast Asia, but observation with simple telescopes will be possible from almost the entire northern hemisphere. You can also follow the asteroid through the NASA website.
