Disney made a remake of "Pinocchio" - it turned out so bad that it does not save even Tom Hanks
Miscellaneous / / September 13, 2022
Unnatural graphics, boring music and zero new ideas.
On September 8, the premiere of the film "Pinocchio" took place. Once again, Disney has returned to a classic story. The new picture almost completely copies the cult cartoon of 1940, but real actors were added to the drawn characters.
At the same time, an eminent team worked on the film. Directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump). The composer's chair was taken by Alan Silvestri ("Forrest Gump", "Back to the Future", "The Avengers"). And everything was produced by Chris Weitz (“American Pie”, “Twilight. Saga. New moon").
It is unlikely that anyone does not know the plot of Pinocchio: the lonely old man Giuseppe creates doll, then she comes to life and gets into a heap of adventures. As in the classic cartoon, the main character will visit the island of Pleasure, find himself inside a whale and learn to be an honest boy. But the new version leaves a double impression.
Disney "modernized" the original cartoon
From "Pinocchio" by Robert Zemeckis, one should not expect great discoveries and innovations. The director re-shot the classic animation almost frame by frame. In the first 10-20 minutes it seems that this is justified: some scenes turned out really beautiful. Like the original, the picture evokes emotions: laughter in children, empathy in adults. However, gradually the magic begins to disintegrate.
In recent years Disney is engaged in "modernization" of his best cartoons, most often unsuccessfully. In the case of Pinocchio, they changed the graphics and added a dark-skinned fairy. The film became a little longer, several songs appeared in it. And another ending awaits the audience, although not everyone will watch it. This is where the novelty ends, the operation of the old successful project begins.
Surprisingly, against this background, the premiere of "Pinocchio" by Guillermo del Toro is expected. You can see trailerto understand what it means to "update" - not to add a couple of heroes, but to build a completely different world with a different visual. But for Disney, it's too complicated - it's easier to splurge and copy the original.
Bad picture spoils the impression
The main drawback of Pinocchio 2022, which becomes extremely annoying towards the end, is that the drawn characters do not fit together. Moreover, almost all the characters are simply not developed enough. For example, a fox and a cat appear on the screen, wanting to kidnap Pinocchio. They are hyper-realistic but move like 1940s cartoon characters. Each of their actions looks so absurd that what is happening on the screen is more like a poor-quality advertisingthan cinema.
But the main character is the worst. And this problem can be looked at from two angles: either this film needs a different Pinocchio, or this Pinocchio needs a different film. Why make a realistic background, and then add the most cartoon character? Why couldn't the boy-doll be adapted at least a little? In some scenes, he literally glows - so different from the rest of the graphics. Pinocchio remains bright even in the dark and ends up looking like a foreign body.
And in one of the episodes, the hero's nose grows. For some reason it's done in realistic colors so it looks like something separate from the doll. It turns out that the authors did not have a single concept, not only for the film, but also for the main character.
The only one who was drawn normally was Gemini the cricket. It looks natural on any background.
Inexpressive music in "Pinocchio" adds despondency
Music is another problem with the new film. Perhaps the format musical was chosen in order to deviate at least a little from the original, however, the songs and their performance leave much to be desired. They're not bad, just boring and drawn out. There is a feeling that they are needed only to increase the timing - with them the picture exceeds 100 minutes.
In addition, almost every song provokes dances, and they emphasize the heterogeneity of the characters, their incompatibility.
"Pinocchio" does not save the incredible Tom Hanks
Tom Hanks plays Giuseppe, the doll's maker. The actor turned out to be a wonderful fairy-tale character who is magnificent in every movement and every line. He is poignant in dramatic moments and funny in comedic ones. Separately, I would like to note the movements of Tom Hanks - a stooped old man, waving his arms and legs, as if he came out of a children's book.
But all the efforts of the actor are depreciated when his hero interacts with the drawn characters. Giuseppe can sit at the table and look natural, and then Pinocchio comes up to him and the scene crumbles - the characters simply do not fit together. Of course, this is not a problem with Tom Hanks, this is a fundamental flaw of the filmmakers.
"Pinocchio" by Robert Zemeckis belongs to a cohort of films that evoke different emotions in the viewer - it all depends on age. Children can laugh and rejoice, but adults certainly will cry. But all this is the merit of the original story.
Disney made a remake on the knee. Perhaps it's better to revisit the classic cartoon and not waste time on a new version - even for the sake of Tom Hanks.
