In the 6th season, "Rick and Morty" no longer surprises, but it amuses with references to itself

On September 4 (Russian time is already the 5th), the continuation of the Rick and Morty series started. Exactly a year has passed since the finale of last season - quite a bit for this project. Previously, the breaks were twice as long, but now the authors promise that the series will continue to be released around this schedule.

This is partly welcome news - it's a shame to wait two years and only get ten short episodes. On the other hand, some fans have already begun to worry that the contract is for a dozen seasons that Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon signed to Cartoon Network will put Rick and Morty on flow. After all, there is less time to come up with new ideas. Moreover, in parallel, Roiland releases The Other Side of the Earth.

Of course, it is difficult to judge the prospects for the sixth season of Rick and Morty based on one episode. But it is already noticeable that the creators of the series do not forget about the cross-cutting themes of the project. The first episode may not even seem too funny, but it is important in terms of plot development.

Season 6 of Rick and Morty continues the main theme of the series

The action starts almost from the same moment at which the previous series ended. The citadel is destroyed, the portal gun is broken and the main characters are already preparing to die. They are rescued, but then due to another oversight, Rick, Morty and Jerry are moved to their original worlds. Two Beth and Summer must bring them back. Meanwhile, each of the characters deals with problems in their universe.

It's too early to judge, but already from the first episode, the authors continue the through plot of the series. This makes me think that the new season of "Rick and Morty" decided to make it more holistic. And it kind of changes the mood of the introduction.

If a fifth season started with a light and funny episode about the local analogue of Aquaman and Morty's attempts to flirt with a girl, now the main action is devoted to the self-reflection of the characters. Rick remembers why he even started moving between worlds, Morty learns new things about his father. And Jerry... well, he doesn't change and just stays Jerry.

The series now refers to itself more often

Rick and Morty has always been famous for its abundance of references to classic cinema, comics and other pop culture. Even the title of each series alludes to some movie or book. It seems that the sixth season does not deviate much from this structure. The first episode was titled "Solariks" (hello to Stanislav Lem and Andrei Tarkovsky), and Rick immediately jokes about Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But this is only at first glance. It soon becomes apparent that authors are much more interested in referencing themselves. And this applies not only to the main plot, which is tightly connected with past events.

For example, in the line Jerry is regularly remembered for the second season, and by the end this parallel even becomes the main one. In fact, such jokes do not require a thorough knowledge of the entire series, only superficial memories are enough.

Without a doubt, Rick and Morty has long been a pop culture event. And it seems that the creators of the series are now playing with this in their references.

Rick and Morty Season 6 Offers Nothing New

The only disappointing thing about the first episode is that it doesn't surprise you too much. But Rick and Morty was once called the most unpredictable science fiction series - remember the world where chairs sat on people, where they ordered pizza delivery of phones, or Hitler's snake.

But now the project is designed to simply delight regular fans: everyone is waiting cynical jokes Rika - they are, Morty again finds himself in a difficult situation, but gets out, Jerry, Beth and Summer understand family problems. And all this in parallel worlds with many alternative versions of heroes. We have seen this in Rick and Morty more than once.

Perhaps in the next episodes, the creators will still surprise - the new screensaver hints at various oddities. But there is a possibility that even unusual worlds and reincarnations of characters will seem secondary.

Although this can hardly be called a serious drawback - after all, the series has been around for many years, and fans know almost all the rules of the screen world.

The start of the new season of Rick and Morty will definitely please fans. Already in the first episode, several important points for the main plot are revealed. But perhaps the series will gradually become less fun and surprising. Surely this will not scare away regular viewers, but for those who are used to watching it from time to time, without really thinking about the details, it will be more difficult.
