He shared his first impressions of a fully functional prototype.
Startup Mojo Vision has been developing augmented reality contact lenses since 2015, and it looks like the effort has finally paid off. First working prototype Mojo Lens successfully tested on a person.
Externally, Mojo Lens resembles a slightly strange colored lens, but the most interesting thing is inside. The engineers were able to accommodate a monochrome MicroLED display with a diameter of less than 0.5 mm, an ARM Core M0 processor, a 5 GHz radio transmitter, as well as accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers to track eye movement with extreme precision, stabilizing the image even when the user is fast shifts his gaze.
The device adds a monochrome green interface right on top of the world around it - just like in video games. With it, you can view a map or read an incoming message without touching your smartphone. Everything is controlled with a glance: neither a smartphone nor any controllers are required. The built-in battery will last for a day of work, the method of recharging has not yet been specified.
The main idea of the device is to give people with visual impairments the opportunity to easily perform everyday tasks. In addition, athletes (both amateur and professional athletes) will be able to use Mojo Lens to enhance their workouts. In everyday tasks, such lenses will also come in handy: they will act as a virtual assistant, allowing you to maintain access to the necessary information in any situation.
And on June 23, the finished prototype was first tested on a person - and the company's CEO Drew Perkins acted as a volunteer. What he saw impressed him.
Much to my delight, I found that I could interact with the compass to navigate the terrain, as well as view images and text on top of my surroundings. I saw the future, and was literally speechless.

But there is no talk of a release yet: now numerous volunteers will test the prototype, then the gadget will be finalized taking into account user feedback. The final version will then be sent to the FDA for approval. In parallel, the creators will work with developers of popular applications to expand the capabilities of Mojo Lens in time for launch.
The company has not yet announced the timing of the start of sales of the new device, but notedthat it will cost about the same as a flagship smartphone, so it costs something like a thousand dollars to target.
So far, augmented reality technologies are at the initial stage of development, and with successful commercial launch, Mojo Lens could do for the industry what the first iPhone did for smartphones.
