Such technologies will help fight age-related diseases.
To scientists from the University of Babraham in Cambridge succeededRejuvenation of woman's skin could tackle diseases of aging / BBC successfully rejuvenate the skin cells of a 53-year-old woman to that of a 23-year-old woman. They believe that it is possible to do the same procedure with other tissues of the human body.
To do this, a team of researchers led by Professor Wolf Reik experimented with the process of creating induced pluripotent stem cells (aka iPS cells). It is usually used to turn adult cells into stem cells. The standard exposure time is 50 days, but scientists have reduced it to 12 days. Analysis of the results showed that the state of some cells corresponded to the age of 23, and not 53 years.
The use of such methods in clinics is still far away: the creation of iPS cells increases the risk of developing cancer. But the authors of the study are confident that in the future it is possible to create an alternative, safer method of cell rejuvenation. Professor Reik noted that the main goal of all such procedures should not be to prolong life, but to prolong health and counteract age-related diseases.
At first, the technique is supposed to be used to create drugs that can rejuvenate affected areas of the skin (including burns and serious wounds) in order to speed up their healing. Laboratory experiments have confirmed that this is possible, but clinical trials have not yet been conducted.
The next step will be to test the technology on other tissues, including muscle, blood cells and liver cells.
