10 Upcoming A Songs of Ice and Fire Projects
Miscellaneous / / March 10, 2022
And about working on five books.
Writer George R. R. Martin posted a new entry in his blog, in which he spoke in detail about the status of ten projects in the A Song of Ice and Fire universe.
Books
Martin continues work on The Winds of Winter, the final book in the series. This project remains his top priority. The author noted that he made great progress in 2020, while 2021 was less successful - "but less is better than nothing."
In parallel, he is working on a sequel to Fire and Blood (which he is thinking of calling Blood and Fire rather than Fire and Blood. Volume 2" as originally planned). A couple of hundred pages are already ready, but there is still a lot of work ahead.
He also wants to complete the Tale of Dunk and Egg series of short stories, given his forthcoming film adaptation. In addition, an abridged, illustrated version of Fire and Blood will be released later this year. Finally, the last book in the works is Who's Who in Westeros. The author does not reveal the details, but, judging by the title, it will be something like an encyclopedia about the characters and the world of books.
Screen adaptations
Working on the game and animated spin-offs of the Game of Thrones also requires a lot of time and attention: Martin is actively involved in working on each of them. While he has been fortunate to work with talented directors and writers, he still needs to ensure that the events described remain within the canon.
Filming completed in Londondragon houses”, the project moved into the post-production stage. Martin liked the work done and is looking forward to the final result.
Bruno Heller, creator and showrunner of Rome, is writing the script for the pilot episode of Corlis Velarion. It was originally planned to be called "Nine Journeys", but now they use the name "Sea Serpent". This change was necessary to avoid using numbers in the titles of two series at the same time, because "Ten Thousand Ships" about Queen Nymeria is in development. Showrunner Amanda Siegel has already pitched a couple of rough scripts for it.
The third live-action series is the previously mentioned adaptation of The Tales of Dunk and Egg. Steve Conrad (writer of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) will serve as showrunner. Martin had already discussed the details of the project with the team, and he was satisfied with the result. He noted that these characters and stories are very dear to him, and Conrad is determined to adapt them as accurately as possible. The working title is "Knight of the Seven Kingdoms". Also considered is the option of "Hedge Knight" - by the name of the first story, which will form the basis of the first season.
He also confirmed gossip about the upcoming animated series set in Yi-Ti, a state in the southeast of Essos inspired by imperial China. The project will be called "Golden Empire", and "an amazing young screenwriter" is working on it.
Martin hinted that these are not all projects in development, but he did not dare to talk about what HBO has not yet officially announced - or even say how many there will be in total. He noted that many of these ideas are significantly different in tone and approach from what has been created in the universe before.
