Why Watch Inventing Anna, Netflix's Cleverly Tailored Series About a Real-life Swindler
Miscellaneous / / February 09, 2022
The show from the creator of Grey's Anatomy will appeal to true-crime fans and those who love unusual heroines.
On February 11, Reinventing Anna premieres on Netflix. It tells the story of the real-life swindler Anna Sorokina, also known as Anna Delvey. This young girl from Russia skillfully pretended to be a rich heiress and led a luxurious social life in New York for several years. At the same time, she actually lived at someone else's expense.
For her fraud, Delvi ended up in jail. The girl was released in February 2021 and immediately began to write a book about her life.
In fact, the series is a screen version investigationsHow Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People / The Cut The Cut "How Anna Delvey Scammed New York Party People" by Jessica Pressler. And Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey's Anatomy, helped turn the article into a full-fledged story.
This is not the first Netflix project about daring financial fraud. A few years ago, the documentary FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, about a music festival that turned out to be a sham, made a splash. And just last week, another documentary on a related topic was released on streaming - “Swindler from Tinder” about an adventurer who met women on the Internet and scammed them for huge sums. And every time these stories attract the attention of the public.
Because of the sharp social satire
According to the plot, it all starts with the fact that the journalist Vivian Kent (her character is inspired by Jessica Pressler), in defiance of the editor, decides to investigate the story of the German pseudo-heiress Anna Delvey. The boss at first accepts this idea without enthusiasm, but nevertheless agrees to give the employee a chance to write a good text. Vivian fails to talk to Anna herself, who is awaiting trial in prison. Then the journalist decides to interview her ex-boyfriend Chase and other acquaintances, deceived by the impostor.
The series is built as a gallery of people whose lives Anna has had a devastating impact on. Each episode adds more and more new details to the story, and by the end everything is put together into a single puzzle. However, following Pressler, the authors do not seek to denigrate Anna. Delvi looks not just a criminal, but a victim of the modern obsession with a beautiful life. And by this, the message of the series is painfully reminiscent of Sofia Coppola's film "Elite Society", in which teenagers out of boredom robbed the houses of movie stars.
By no means justifying Anna, the authors show how difficult it is for young girls lost in the world and in themselves, who seek not to deserve, not to earn, but to take what is theirs.
Because of the realistic portrayal of narcissism
It is rare to see such a believable image on the screen. narcissistic disorder. It’s impossible to tell if Anna herself has this diagnosis, but Ozark star Julia Garner perfectly portrayed the traits inherent in this type of personality - lack of empathy and a sense of her own grandiosity.
Garner's Anna Delvey is a combination of sharp intelligence, photographic memory and enchanting arrogance. Deep inside, the heroine feels vulnerable. But at the same time, she does everything so that the people around her are also not confident in themselves.
Delvi easily uses others to his advantage, manipulates people and manages to fool even a lawyer around his finger. Joel Coen (who, for a moment, investigated the famous Jordan Belfort scams, whose biography formed the basis of the film «The wolf of Wall Street»). And all because he understands in time how to play on his fatherly feelings.
And this happens to almost everyone who meets the heroine on the way. Delvey ingeniously analyzes vulnerabilities in someone else's psyche, notices everything and mimics for each specific person. Even Vivian, who is supposed to be objective as a journalist, falls under the spell of Anna.
Because of the controversial and interesting main character
Screen Anna is the most controversial personality. It is difficult to empathize with her, it is almost impossible to love her. But for all her negative qualities, she is not at all stupid, and it is easy to imagine that something worthwhile could come out of her business talent.
Throughout all nine episodes, you feel disgust for the character of Anna, and at the same time, to some extent, you are fascinated by her grip. And it seems that it is precisely such heroines (or rather, anti-heroines) that are now lacking in popular culture. After all, real emancipation on the screen lies in the freedom of a woman to be anyone.
Because of Julia Garner's performance, "Inventing Anna" is better to watch in the original. Delvey's mannered and subtle voice adds a very important touch to her portrait, but the dubbing does not convey this at all.
In a word, I would like to recommend this film adaptation to literally everyone. It will be of interest to those viewers who are attracted by the well-developed psychology of the characters. For those who want to see a truly unusual female heroine. And just to everyone who is interested in the history of Delvi. In addition, the series has a great pace, and you definitely will not get bored.
