This is a major milestone in space exploration, comparable to the landing of humans on the moon.
NASA is officially announcedthat the Parker Solar Probe spacecraft flew through the upper atmosphere of the Sun for the first time in history. He collected samples of particles and magnetic fields, and also sent a photo.
Space agency engineers say this is a major milestone and a giant leap forward in the study of the sun. Touching the material that makes up a star will help uncover its origin and study the effect on the entire solar system.
The Parker Solar Probe was the first spacecraft to come so close to a hot star. The spacecraft discovered that there are many magnetic zigzag structures of the solar wind near the Sun. For a long time it has been a mystery how and where they are formed. Now the probe continues to fly through the stellar corona and collect data for further study.
This information will allow scientists to look into the area that is critical in overheating the corona and accelerating the solar wind to supersonic speeds. The probe's measurements will help understand and predict extreme space weather events that can disrupt communications and damage satellites around the Earth.
Parker Solar Probe was launched in 2018 to explore the mysteries of the Sun. Three years after the launch and decades after the start of its development, the apparatus achieved its goal. It can withstand incredible temperatures using an 11 cm thick CFRP heat shield. Its limit is 1370 degrees Celsius.
