Excel for the web now works with large files
Miscellaneous / / December 07, 2021
In the near future, the functions will be available to all users.
Microsoft continues to blur the lines between desktop Excel and the web version of the browser service, adding new features to the latter.
Now you can work with tables from SharePoint Online up to 100 MB in the browser, which allows you to open and edit massive files without having to go to the desktop application. Previously, files up to 50 MB were supported; for documents attached to emails in Outlook, the 10 MB limit is preserved.
The web version also has the ability to access password-protected tables for opening or editing - now you don't need to open the main program to do this. It's worth noting that password protection disables co-authoring, so Microsoft recommends granting editing rights to those who need access all the time.
In addition, now the browser version of Excel is able to open tables with unsupported objects (Camera Tools, ActiveX Controls, Smart Art). We are not talking about full support: you will not be able to view or edit them, but you will be able to work with other table elements without opening the desktop application.
Features are rolling out gradually and will soon be available to all users. We also announced several changes that will appear in the web version of the editor later:
- Supports tables up to 100MB from OneDrive (Microsoft 365 subscribers only).
- Ability to work with files containing Text Query, Web Query, Query Table, or SharePoint Lists (the functions themselves will not be supported, but the rest of the table elements can be edit).
