Saved - means earned. How to use a debit card wisely?
Miscellaneous / / November 17, 2021
1. Save up on the remainder
Some banks offer savings debit cards to customers. This means that a percentage is charged on the balance on the card. Savings cards can sometimes replace a bank deposit, for example, if you want to be more flexible in managing funds. They offer a monthly interest rate comparable to the deposit, while the owner can withdraw money and replenish the account without restrictions.
As a rule, banks set a lower limit on the card balance: for example, in order to accrue interest, it is necessary that 5 thousand rubles remain on the account. Otherwise, conditions in different banks may differ. There are three main options for calculating interest:
- For a minimum balance within a month. Suppose at the beginning of the month there were 10 thousand rubles on your card, then you transferred another 20 thousand, and at the end of the month - another 50 thousand. The bank will accrue interest only on the minimum balance on the account - 10 thousand. And if the balance on the account drops below the set limit for at least a day, you will not see any interest at all.
- On the average monthly balance. It can be calculated by dividing the sum of all account balances at the beginning of each day by the number of days in a month. For example, on the 1st of the month you had 10 thousand rubles on your account, and on the 15th you put another 20 thousand. If there were 30 days in a month, then the average monthly balance will be more than 20 thousand rubles. This amount will be accrued interest.
- On the daily balance. Interest is calculated on the actual account balance at the beginning of each day, and is paid once at the end of the month.
If you actively use the card, the most profitable option would be to accrue interest on the daily balance: you can pay with the card or replenish it without losing your reward.
The bank determines the interest rate. Sometimes he can charge one percent on a part of the amount, and another on the rest.
With a debit card "Profit»You can get up to 8% per annum on the balance. For example, if the amount of the card balance is 100 thousand rubles per month, the bank will charge you more than 8 thousand rubles per year. To get the maximum percentage, you need to comply with one condition - to buy a month for an amount of at least 10 thousand rubles. Interest is charged on the daily balance of up to RUB 2 million inclusive. And also “Profit»Allows you to receive up to 3% cashback for purchases, make transfers without commission and withdraw cash from ATMs of other banks.

You will need a savings card and a credit card that provides for a grace period - a period during which interest is not accrued on the loan. Pay for everyday purchases with a credit card, and when the time comes for payment, transfer funds from a debit card to it. Due to the fact that you have not spent money on a savings card for a month, the bank will charge a higher percentage on the balance. It is advisable not to withdraw cash from the credit card and not to make transfers according to the details - the grace period may be interrupted.
For example, your salary is 100 thousand rubles. You put the entire amount on a savings card, which provides for the accrual of interest on the balance up to 6% per annum. You issue a credit card with a grace period of 30 days and pay it, and when the grace period comes to an end, transfer the amount spent to the credit card. In a month, 490 rubles will appear on the accumulative card due to the accrual of interest. It seems a little, but in a year it will turn out to be almost 6 thousand rubles.
A credit card scheme will work if you are willing to meet all deadlines. Otherwise, you will lose more than you earn. Of course, the credit card limit should not exceed your income.
3. Give me my money back
To increase customer loyalty and motivate them to pay by card more often, banks offer cashback - a refund of part of the money spent. When you use a card to settle in a store, the merchant pays the bank a commission for each transaction. Part of this amount remains with the merchant's bank, and part of the payment systems are transferred to the bank that issued your card. Cashback is returned from these funds.
When choosing a card, pay attention to the conditions for calculating cashback. Sometimes, in order to receive a refund of part of the money, you must spend a certain amount on the card. For example, with a premium card, the bank can charge cashback only to those who spend from 100 thousand rubles. If you make only 50 thousand, it will be difficult to do this.
In addition, it will be useful to take into account the service fee for the card - sometimes it is higher than the accrued cashback. Suppose card service costs 400 rubles. And the bank charges cashback within 2%. This means that in order to reach zero, you need to spend 20 thousand rubles a month.
Some banks charge a fixed cashback for all goods, others - depending on the category of purchase. You also need to take into account that cashback may not apply to some operations, for example, payment of utilities, purchase of securities, bets from bookmakers. Remember that banks do not charge cashback for money cashed at an ATM. Therefore, if you often use cash - for example, buy groceries on the market - a card with a cashback may be less profitable than if you only resorted to non-cash payments.
4. Join the loyalty program
Some banks reward loyal customers with points or discounts at partner stores. This is similar to cashback, the difference is that you are credited not with "real" money, but with points. Depending on the conditions of the loyalty program, they can be spent on purchases in specific stores, dinner at a restaurant or plane tickets.
When choosing, consider the specifics of your spending. For example, if you travel frequently, it may be beneficial for you to get a card with miles that can be exchanged for flights or hotel stays. Often, you can select the categories of purchases for which you want to earn increased points - for example, baby, grocery, or other goods.
