Dexter Season 9: Cult TV Show Bright Return
Miscellaneous / / November 13, 2021
It is unclear if the sequel will be able to fix the unfortunate ending, but the first episodes are very encouraging.
November 8 on the American channel Showtime (in Russia - on Amediateka) a new season of the famous TV series "Dexter" starts. The project was formally completed back in 2013. But for many years the ending of the eighth season was called the most unsuccessful final of the project.
Recall that the series told about the maniac Dexter Morgan (Michael S. Hall). As a child, the hero witnessed the murder of his mother, and over time, a craving for violence arose in him. Dexter's adoptive father Harry, who served in the police, decided to use his son's dark desires for the benefit. As a result, the hero secretly killed criminals who, for one reason or another, could not be arrested.
In the finale of the eighth season, after the sudden death of his sister, Dexter left the young son of Harrison to his girlfriend Hannah, faked his own death and went into self-imposed exile.
This ending was considered by many to be too compromise. The hero was never punished for his crimes, and his further fate remained unclear.
And so the showrunner of the series Clyde Phillips decided to release an additional season of 10 episodes with the subtitle "Fresh Blood". According toDexter Season 9 Is Happening Because Of The Original Series Ending / ScreenRant authors, this should be the real final of the project and fix past mistakes. So far, only three episodes of the sequel have been provided to the press, and it is difficult to say how interesting everything will end. But it is already clear that the return of a favorite project will certainly delight fans. Moreover, the ninth season rests not only on references to past events, but also captures with new twists.
Intriguing start
After the events of the eighth season, Dexter settled in the small town of Iron Lake under the name Jim Lindsay. He works as a salesman in an arms store, sharpens knives for local butchers and meets a sheriff girl. But most importantly, the hero has not been killing anyone for many years, although he arranges a strange relaxation for himself: he runs through the forest, supposedly hunting a deer. And in the end, he never shoots at him. With his father Harry, who came in visions, Dexter has long said goodbye. But now he is communicating with the ghost of his sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), helping him not to break down.
One day, the grown-up Garrison comes to the city, deciding to find his father. And at the same time, an event occurs that causes Dexter to spontaneously return to killing.
The new season immediately launches several overlapping storylines. The viewer is informed about Dexter's attempts to start a new life and return to murder, then they introduce hints of a mysterious maniac, and in addition to everything they tell about the relationship of the protagonist with the grown-up son.
The sequel seems to retain the structure of the previous seasons of "Dexter", combining detective and personal drama, but at the same time focuses on new themes. Strictly speaking, the season can be watched separately from the entire series, it is completely self-sufficient. The viewer will only need the most general information.
Moreover, now the hero lives in a completely different atmosphere. Filled with secrets and crimes, the metropolis was replaced by a small city in which everyone knows each other. Therefore, Dexter will have to act in a completely different way: it is much more difficult to hide a crime in such a place. And the arrival of Garrison becomes a significant event, as the true identity of Jim Lindsay can be revealed.
The son is given his own story, and a significant part of the timing is devoted to her. And this is a really interesting character: an orphan whose real and adoptive mother died, and his father escaped, leaving a mysterious note. It looks like trauma adolescent will become an important part of the plot.
It's hard to talk about the line of a new maniac kidnapping girls: only the plot of this part was shown. There is concern that his identity was revealed in some promotional material when the cast of Season 9 was announced (perhaps you shouldn't include these links in the text). But the audience is clearly waiting for a return to the classic story, when Dexter will have to break the law for the good.
Unobtrusive references
While the ninth season looks like a story in its own right, it will mostly be watched by longtime fans of the series. And for them a lot of references to favorite moments of "Dexter" have been saved.
The most unexpected and funny hint appears at the beginning of the season. Surprisingly, it doesn't even belong to the series. The new pseudonym of the protagonist seems to remind of Jeff Lindsay - the author of the book The Slumbering Demon Dexter ", according to which the first seasons of the project were filmed (the continuation of the novel and the film adaptation developed independently from friend).
And, of course, the ghost of Debra Morgan becomes the main reminder of the past. She is introduced into the plot very gracefully, as if trying to confuse the viewer for a few minutes (although only beginners or those who have completely forgotten the finale of the eighth season will fall for the trick). The heroine will regularly return Dexter to one of the most traumatic events. And this, by the way, will turn some scenes into creepy screamers that many will envy. Horror.
As the action develops, the authors throw in other references to previous events. And they do it not too head-on, but with humor and obvious love. The scene looks very funny when a new expert arrives at the crime scene and behaves in almost the same way as Dexter once did.
It is already known that in the future in the series they will showDexter Season 9: John Lithgow Returning As Trinity Killer / ScreenRant and the famous maniac Trinity from the fourth season, played by John Lithgow. The actor spent only one day on the set, so it will probably only be a small flashback.
It is worth giving credit to the creators of the new season. They didn't make the comeback banal nostalgia with endless cameos of actors and retelling of past events. Only a couple of characters are returning, and even then for secondary roles. Most of the action was made fresh and interesting.
Unclear prospects
And yet, it will not yet be possible to answer the main question: is this season necessary? For fans, the series ended in 2013. And no new stories will correct the strange plot moves: the sudden death of Debra and the flight of Dexter. Moreover, the continuation does not cancel that ending, but only builds on a new plot.
It seems that the ninth season of "Dexter" appeared only against the background of a general trend. In recent years, there have been sequels to many famous TV series that were closed about 10 years ago: from "The X-Files" to the plotless reunion of "Friends". Although good examples like “Twin Peaks”Show that sometimes the authors do have something to say even years after the original ending. But it is difficult to imagine how you can now adequately complete the biography of the main character. Even if the creators decide to take a radical turn, which many talked about back in 2013, it will look like a belated reaction to please the fans. It's even worse if they lean towards an unnatural happy ending or even decide to replace Dexter with his son.
Therefore, it is better not to expect corrected mistakes and a revolutionary ending from the new "Dexter". It's just an opportunity for another 10 episodes to return to the atmosphere of your favorite series with all its trademark features: bloody cruelty, black humor and the philosophical reasoning of the protagonist.
Although I would like to believe that the authors will still be able to add some surprises and witty twists to the pleasant nostalgia.
