In just 30 years, many of them may change beyond recognition.
Scientists from the independent research company Climate Central recalled that at the current level of carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, the average temperature on Earth could increase by 3 ° C. Such warming will significantly accelerate the melting of glaciers, which, in turn, will lead to an increase in the world ocean level and flooding of many coastal areas.
The regions of China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam, where a huge proportion of the population occupies land below the projected tide line, will be the first to be affected. According to preliminary forecasts, this will affect up to 15% of the current world population, which is about one billion people.
For clarity, Climate Central published visualization of the water level in different cities of the world in an unfavorable scenario. Here are some examples of famous landmarks.
Lalbagh Fortress, Dhaka, Bangladesh
Cathedral Square, Havana, Cuba
Central Mosque, Lagos, Nigeria
St Paul's Cathedral, London, UK
Skyscrapers in Pudong District, Shanghai, China
Temple of Literature, Hanoi, Vietnam
Burj Khalifa, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia
A visual video was also published.
Scientists believe that if we do not try to take control of the situation now, then in just 30 years we will face catastrophic consequences. Climate Central hopes that the 2016 Paris Climate Agreement will help contain the rise in global average temperatures and prevent significant increases in sea levels.
