In a couple of years, such a device will be able to call an ordinary passenger.
California-based startup Joby Aero, which develops air taxis, reportedthat their prototype successfully flew nearly 250 km on a single charge. The company claims this is the longest flight ever performed by an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
It was one of many tests that Joby Aero performed at its takeoff site in Big Sur, the area in California after which Apple named firmware for Mac). The flying machine was controlled from the ground by pilot Justin Paynes. In an hour and 17 minutes, eVTOL completed 11 laps along a previously agreed route, covering a distance of 248.8 km, after which it made a vertical landing.
The aircraft uses conventional lithium-ion batteries, which have been improved for this aircraft. Laboratory tests have shown that the batteries have a lifespan of more than 10,000 rated flights - meeting the requirements of passenger eVTOL. The creators claim that this is a significant step towards comfortable and fast travel without harmful emissions into the atmosphere.
Joby Aero plans to obtain approval from the US Federal Aviation Administration to begin commercial flights as early as 2024. A pilot and up to four passengers can be in the taxi at the same time, and the maximum travel speed will be 320 km / h. German flying taxis are also scheduled to launch in 2024 Volocopterso this should be a really interesting year for tech geeks.
