In the "War of the Future" cool special effects and a complete lack of logic
Miscellaneous / / July 31, 2021
The film is worth watching for action and action fans, but it will piss off sci-fi fans.
On July 2, the high-budget action movie "War of the Future" about the battle between humanity and aliens was released on Amazon streaming service. The main roles were played by Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski and J. TO. Simmons.
Critics and all kinds of reviewers immediately scolded the picture for being illogical on the verge of absurdity. But the audience was pleased with the cool special effects and humor. And it looks like "War of the Future" will be another work that will separate experts and ordinary fans of the action: Rotten tomatoes the film has only 54% positiveThe Tomorrow War / Rotten Tomatoes reviews from critics, but 82% from viewers.
In fact, both are right. Inexperienced filmmaker Chris McKay and screenwriter Zak Dean came up with a completely awkward idea of war with aliens. But they filmed a dynamic action movie with bright characters.
The stupidest concept
The action begins today. Former SWAT and now teacher Dan Forester (Chris Pratt) lives happily with his wife and daughter and is trying to get a prestigious job. Suddenly, soldiers arrive from the future and announce that in 30 years mankind will enter a war with those who have come from nowhere.
aliens white thorns. People are sorely lacking resources, so recruits are recruited from the past. Soon, most of the military are killed and members of the government around the world begin to recruit ordinary citizens. Among the soldiers is Dan, who will fulfill an important mission in the future. It should be noted right away that any feature film involves certain assumptions about the plot. If the characters of horror films behaved reasonably, half of the stories would simply not exist. Even in drama, there are often events that are needed only for tragic turns. And even more so it concerns science fiction. Dozens of errors are found in the well-written Interstellar. And even "Darkness"- one of the slimmest series about time travel - sometimes criticized.
But the War of the Future is a different story. This film is all about absurdities and assumptions. The very idea of recruiting soldiers from the past looks strange. Further, the authors try to partially explain it, but this does not help. Moreover, people are being sent into the future, many of whom do not know how to hold weapons in their hands and are not physically prepared at all. They are not even shown photographs of white-thorns and are not told what they look like. Of course, after the transfer, the vast majority of newcomers die instantly.
But even if you accept this part, attributing it to the sudden stupidity of all the governments of the world, then the main plot will throw up the stupidest twists and turns.
The soldier is thrown on warbut when he returns, no one wants to hear his plan to defeat the aliens. Although there are experts who confirm that they worked with a scientist from the future who proposed this solution. And as a result, the schoolboy becomes the main strategist who must help the heroes. Just because it was shown before.
Impressions from "War of the Future" are also spoiled by the similarity of the film with other famous films. With the "Edge of the Future" he is related by a mixture of confrontation between people and aliens and time travel, and the finale refers to "Aliens" and "Something». But the level of elaboration is strikingly different from them. The new film does not even really explain the cyclical behavior of the monsters. It's just for the convenience of the screenwriter.
Viewers who are inclined to understand the logic of the plot will grab their heads every 10 minutes. You can only get pleasure from watching if you forget about any reasonable explanations for a while. And then you can see that there are some good elements in the "War of the Future".
Cool special effects and great action
There has long been a preconceived attitude towards science fiction films released on streaming - alas, most often justified. Even with high budgets, paintings and series from Netflix or Amazon looks incomparably poorer than blockbusters from the big screens.
But this does not apply to the "War of the Future". A whopping $ 200 million was invested in the film, and when it comes to fighting aliens, you can see where the budget went.
Of course, the design of the monsters is not completely original. They are clearly copied from insects, somewhat reminiscent of the xenomorphs from "Aliens", and move like the representatives of the feline family. But the level of elaboration of the white ships is impressive even at the first encounter of the heroes with them.
And then the scale will only grow. The scene of the attack of monsters on a helicopter will impress any fan of fantastic action movies and even remind one of the moments in “War of the Worlds Z». And the battle for the naval base will make you sad at all that such a large-scale film is not shown in cinemas.
We can only advise everyone who is going to watch "The War of the Future" to find a friend with the largest TV, or better with a home theater. Then the picture will look much more interesting.
Unusual storytelling and dramatic twists
And again it is worth making a reservation that "War of the Future" does not offer something completely surprising and original, it cannot be attributed to stories with unpredictable ending. Still, the film will surprise many viewers as its structure differs from typical action fiction films.
It seems that too long an introduction here is needed only in order to clarify the ridiculous concept to the viewer. But in fact, the authors introduce us to the hero's family. Almost all of Dan's further motivation will be tied to relationships with family. Unfortunately, there is simply not enough time for a deep study, but the heredity of generations, and the communication of the father with the child, and the topic of forgiveness will organically fit into the general plot.
Here "War of the Future" is also saved by an excellent cast. Chris Pratt once again appears in the image of a person who suits him very much, who combines coolness and care. There is a sincere warmth between his hero and the character Yvonne Strahovski. J. TO. Simmons, who plays Dan's father, is given unacceptably little time, but he draws the maximum emotion from every minute on the screen.
But more importantly, after the middle, when the picture seems to be developing linearly, the action rolls back. Moreover, both in the plot and in the tempo. This prevents the film from becoming clichéd action movie and makes the viewer follow the action.
Alas, the failed plot logic spoils a significant part of the impressions of the "War of the Future". It's hard to believe that a movie with a huge budget could be so dumb. But if you try to forget about it, the picture proves that streaming services have already reached the level of world blockbusters. The tape conquers with the elaboration of effects and action. And for sure it will be a great entertainment for the evening for fans of the genre.
