A mask that can test for coronavirus
Miscellaneous / / July 31, 2021
Scientists from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have createdWearable materials with embedded synthetic biology sensors for biomolecule detection a protective face mask that tests the wearer for COVID-19 in 90 minutes with high accuracy.
For this, sensors are used, consisting of cell-free circuit components that pass through through lyophilization (freeze drying method), which allows them to be stored a lot months. When activated by water, they can interact with a target molecule-target, which can be an RNA or DNA sequence, and give a signal when it is detected.
The mask also has a small reservoir of water that is released at the touch of a button when the user is ready to perform a test. It moisturizes the components of the SARS-CoV-2 sensor, which analyzes the received saliva drops inside the mask and gives the result within 90 minutes. The creators claim that such a test is not inferior in sensitivity to PCR, and in speed - to rapid antigen tests.
The development of such sensors has been carried out since 2014, and the SHERLOCK system, which is used in the new mask, was introduced in 2017. Sensors can be installed for other pathogens, including influenza, Ebola and Zika. The sensors are disposable: after use they must be disposed of and a new one installed on the same mask (provided that it is reusable).
In the future, it is planned to introduce such sensors into medical clothing. Already, the same scientists have managed to create a jacket with 30 sensors, which, as in the case of the mask, are activated upon contact with moisture. The test will allow the doctor to find out if he has been in contact with an infected patient.
The way of displaying the result can be changed: it can be a change in the color of the sensor, which is visible with the naked eye, or a fluorescent or luminescent signal that is read by a portable spectrometer. Scientists have also developed a miniature spectrometer that can be embedded in tissue to read and transmit the result to a smartphone.
The creators note that in its current form, the prototype is almost ready for mass production, and several companies have already shown interest in bringing it to the market.
