How to calibrate Apple TV using iPhone

This week officially presented Apple TV 4K second generation. The set-top box received a new Siri Remote, HDMI 2.1 and A12 processor. During the presentation, special attention was paid to the new high-precision color calibration - but, as it turned out, this feature is not exclusive to the new model and works on older Apple TVs too.

It will appear in tvOS 14.5 on all models starting with Apple TV HD (2015) and will compensate for poor color calibration on some TVs. To do this, tvOS uses iPhone sensors to compare the displayed colors with the reference colors and the user does not have to change anything manually.

How to calibrate Apple TV

You will need an Apple TV HD (2015) or newer and an iPhone with Face ID with tvOS 14.5 and iOS 14.5 respectively. The system is suitable for all TVs without Dolby Vision. The process itself is as simple as possible:

1. Open Settings on Apple TV.
2. Go to Audio & Video → Color Balance.
3. Following the instructions on the screen, direct the smartphone display towards the center of the TV. Do not remove iPhone until calibration is complete.

The system will then show you the default colors and the calibration result so you can choose what you like best.

But remember that the changes will only affect the content that is played through the Apple TV: if you want to watch the news on TV, the standard picture settings will be used.

Since this feature requires tvOS 14.5 and iOS 14.5, it currently only works on devices with beta installed, but both are expected to be publicly released early next week.
