"Are you sure a Lifehacker?" Fraudsters represent themselves as employees of our publication. Here's how not to fall for their tricks
Edition / / January 07, 2021
What happened?
The Lifehacker's editors were contacted by applicants who responded to the vacancy, allegedly posted by us on the Avito website. Scammers sent messages from an address [email protected].
One of the candidates was offered a job as an editor with a salary of 30 thousand rubles on a trial period and 45 thousand afterwards. Then they announced the volume of work and said that about 500 articles a day are published on the site (a nice number, but too big for us!). The scammers even sent a presentation with our values - the text was copied from our editorial policy, of course. In the final, the candidate was asked for a phone number and disappeared, having stopped responding to messages.
A day after the first appeal, we received a message from another deceived candidate. His scammers asked to send a copy of his passport. All correspondence is at the disposal of the editors.
How to make sure that they wrote to me from Lifehacker?
Such fraudulent schemes are quite common: attackers pose as employees of large companies in order to obtain someone else's personal data. Here's a quick guide for those who don't want to be deceived.
- Check the mail from which they write to you. HR Director Maria Nikolaeva answers from the address [email protected]. All employees of our team have mail on the lifehacker.ru domain, no one else can register on it. We write to HeadHunter from a verified account of Buffer Bay, a company of which Lifehacker is a part.
- Specify the name of the employee. The names of authors, editors and other Lifehacker employees are listed on the page "Editorial staff». This does not protect against the fraudster posing as a false name, but minimizes the risks a little.
- Feel free to ask questions. You can check the name of the employee and the reality of the vacancy by writing to [email protected]. This mail is read by our editors every day. We will definitely give an answer.
What does the editors think about this?
We are very sorry that scammers hide behind our name and reputation and deceive those who are looking for work. A life hacker is often in search of valuable personnel and posts vacancies on a large number of sites. And least of all we want to lose the trust of our readers and those who want to work with us. Please be vigilant and check information before sharing personal information with strangers.
Since I'm here, what are the Lifehacker vacancies currently open?
