OPPO Find X2 review: quality that will have to pay dearly
Devices / / January 06, 2021
OPPO is the "Asian Tiger" conquering the global market together with Xiaomi and Huawei. Smartphones of this brand are becoming more and more popular, but along with this, the price rises. It got to the point that the flagship model Find X2 stands as analogues from Samsung, Sony or Apple. How are the Chinese planning to win the love of the consumer by giving up low prices? Let's sort it out in order.

Design and ergonomics
Find X2 is another glass-metal "sandwich" with a curved screen, tiny bezels and a massive camera unit. On this, the description of the exterior could have ended, but the designers did a good job on the details.
Underneath the rear window is an aquamarine substrate with a geometric pattern. Logos and inscriptions are located on the same line with the camera block, the design of the latter is also verified as if it were a ruler. The quality of the materials and their fit are impeccable. Perhaps this is one of the best incarnations of a design that has set the teeth on edge.
The front camera is built into the display, so there are no sliding platforms in the spirit of last year's Find X. The controls are located on different sides: on the right is the power button, on the left are the volume keys. The bottom end is occupied by a USB Type ‑ C connector, a multimedia speaker and a SIM card tray.
The smartphone fits comfortably in the palm of your hand thanks to the rounded corners and edges, but it quickly becomes covered with prints and strives to slip out. The set includes a silicone case that solves both problems. It is also worth mentioning that the black version of the model has a ceramic back, which is more resistant to drops.
Screen
The main feature of OPPO Find X2 is an AMOLED display with a diagonal of 6.7 inches and a resolution of 3,168 × 1,440 pixels (QHD +). The matrix has a diamond pixel structure: there are twice as many green diodes as red and blue. In theory, the clarity of the picture should decrease, but this more than compensates for the pixel density of 513 ppi. As a result, the friability characteristic of many AMOLED displays is not visible here even in small text.
DisplayMate has already awardedOPPO Find X2 OLED Display Technology Shoot ‑ Out the screen of the device is the highest rated A +. Experts noted almost perfect color reproduction, contrast level and viewing angles, as well as high-quality anti-reflective coating. Looking at the display live, it's hard to disagree with this: the picture is natural, clear and bright in any conditions. The screen also supports HDR10 + content with high dynamic range.
Another important characteristic is the refresh rate of 120 Hz. Unlike Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, it is also available at QHD + system resolution, so you don't have to sacrifice clarity for the sake of smoothness. There is also a flicker-free mode that reduces eye strain.
The only gripe with the screen is color distortion at the curved edges. Unfortunately, in pursuit of the wow effect, manufacturers come up with impractical solutions that they have to put up with.
Software and performance
OPPO Find X2 runs Android 10 with Color OS 7.1 proprietary shell. The Chinese have long since moved away from lurid interfaces and even learned to follow Google's design code. So, in Color OS, you can enable the Material theme so that the shell blends well with system applications and services.
The hardware platform is the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset, manufactured using a 7-nanometer process technology. It is the most powerful solution for Android smartphones to date. The SoC includes one core operating at 2.84 GHz, three Cortex ‑ A77 cores at 2.42 GHz, another overclocked to 2.84 GHz, and four energy efficient Cortex ‑ A55 operating at 1.8 GHz. The system is complemented by an Adreno 650 video accelerator, 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory without expansion.
In practice, this gives an absolutely smooth and responsive interface at both 60 Hz and 120 Hz. Apps launch lightning fast and are not unloaded from memory in the background, gaming performance is fine too: World Of Tanks: Blitz runs at maximum graphics settings with a stable 60 FPS without drawdowns and strong heating.
The smartphone supports biometric fingerprint login. The optical type scanner is installed in the screen, it works quickly and accurately. There is also a face recognition function, but it only uses the front camera and does not work well in the dark.
It is noteworthy that Find X2 is equipped with a 5G modem, but it was disabled in the version for the Russian market. There were no problems with working in LTE networks.
Sound
The novelty has received stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos technology: one is located at the bottom end of the case, the second is played by a conversational speaker. The volume margin is very large, however, at maximum values, an overload occurs: the sound becomes sharper. However, for watching videos on YouTube or playing games, 60-70% volume is enough.
There is no 3.5mm audio jack. Includes earpods a la EarPods with USB Type-C connection. They sound quite ordinary and will suit undemanding listeners.
The smartphone received a system of three microphones that can focus on the voice and suppress background noise. Voice transmission during calls is not satisfactory. But what you can find fault with is the vibration motor. The tactile feedback is slightly rattling and not as pleasant as in the latest Samsung. Not to mention the iPhone with the Taptic Engine.
Camera
On paper, the cameras in the OPPO Find X2 are not particularly impressive. The standard module is based on the Sony IMX586 sensor with a resolution of 48 megapixels, which can now be found in inexpensive models. Also, the smartphone is equipped with a "shirik" and a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom (and hybrid up to 5 ×). Front camera resolution is 32 megapixels.
The device produces excellent photos in daytime conditions. We put a separate plus for autofocus in a wide-angle camera: this allows you to take effective macro shots. Indoors, the quality is also good, but shooting in the dark is difficult for a smartphone. And even the night mode doesn't help much.
Video is recorded in 4K resolution with 60 FPS frame rate, stabilization and stereo sound.
Autonomy
Inside the smartphone, two batteries are installed at once, each with a capacity of 2,100 mAh. Such an unusual solution was used for the fastest charging on the market: the technology is called Super VOOC and allows you to charge the batteries in less than 40 minutes. However, it works only with the supplied adapter and USB-cable, so when connected with a third-party cable, the charging time will be longer.
The total capacity of 4,200 mAh is not particularly impressive, because there is already a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra on the market with a 5,000 mAh battery. However, in practice, OPPO lives significantly longer than its Korean competitor, and this is at a screen frequency of 120 Hz and a system resolution of QHD +.
The smartphone can easily withstand a day of active use, if not loaded with heavy games. If you put the gadget in World of Tanks, then 10 minutes at the outlet is enough to recharge the batteries by 40%.
Outcome
OPPO Find X2 is a very good smartphone with a thoughtful design, great screen, user-friendly system interface and uncompromising performance. However, now a smartphone for 73 thousand is not enough to be very good - you need to stand out from the competitors. The model also received ultra-fast charging, but is it enough to win the consumer?
The problem with the Find X2 is that, at a high price point, it lacks durability. Soon, models will burst into the market that will offer the same functions significantly cheaper. In addition, the new product from OPPO does not match the quality of shooting with Huawei P40, Google Pixel 4 or even Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro. Finally, the smartphone will remain in the shadow of the Find X2 Pro model, which has got all the interesting chips: an eco-leather back and a new camera system with periscope zoom. It is a pity that it was never brought to the Russian market.
