9 years after its launch, the Facebook Messenger service still received a desktop version. The features of the application are similar to those of the browser version of chats, but keeping the messenger in a separate window is more convenient for many users than in one of the countless browser tabs. The app also supports voice and video calls, which can involve up to 8 people at the same time.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckebreerg wrote in post on his page: “Now we are all looking for a way to stay in touch, even if we physically cannot be there. This is why we are launching the native Messenger app for Windows and macOS. Over the past month, you have doubled the frequency of using Facebook from your computer, and the new application will make your communication even more convenient. "
The program was announced last year at the F8 conference, which Facebook hosts annually for developers. This year's event was supposed to take place on May 5-6, but it was canceled due to the coronavirus. It seems that for the same reason, the desktop Messenger was decided to be released earlier and without loud presentations.
