At WWDC 2020, which was held exclusively online this year for the first time, Apple announced a new version of the firmware for smartphones. Contrary to earlier The company reportedly decided not to revert to the iPhoneOS name in this generation.
The main innovation is the Today screen widgets, which are now available in different sizes - depending on how much information you want to see from them. In addition, these widgets can be dragged to the main screen for quick access.
They did not spend much time talking about the new Application Gallery. But this is, in fact, an alternative way to display all your applications - you can create folders and the system will fill them automatically.
Another important feature was the emergence of the "Picture in picture" mode. Now you can keep the video open on top of other applications - it won't go anywhere even when you exit the current program. In addition, you can move the video off the screen and continue listening to the sound from it - which will be convenient, for example, for students to take notes of lectures in "Notes" or Pages.
The new system application "Translator" will help you translate the conversation in real time - and it does not require an Internet connection, so all your data will be stored locally. Split-screen horizontal mode makes communicating with people who don't speak your language even easier and more convenient. There is support for 11 languages, including Russian.
A more convenient division into the type of transport has appeared in the standard "Maps". In this case, the route will now indicate how much you will need to climb - including stairs. Due to this, you can choose a more convenient route - especially if you are traveling on a bicycle that is difficult to lift.
Few changes befell the "Messages". Now you can pin the most important messages from above, as in many popular instant messengers, as well as mute notifications from group chats is one of the most anticipated features that Apple has long ignored.
Special attention was paid to the CarKey functions, first introduced in the iOS 13.4 beta. It will allow you to use your smartphone instead of car keys. After all the settings, it will be enough for you to bring your smartphone to the NFC sensor on the car door, and it will open. Place your smartphone on the wireless charging shelf to start your car.
BMW's new lineup due out next month will be the first to receive this feature, with other manufacturers joining in 2021. It is noteworthy that CarKeys will also be available on iOS 13 - but only on smartphones with the Apple U1 chip (so far it is only in the iPhone 11/11 Pro and is not available in the iPhone SE 2020).
iOS 14 will be available this fall on the following devices:
- iPhone 6S and 6S Plus;
- iPhone 7 and 7 Plus;
- iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
- iPhone X;
- iPhone XS and XS Max;
- iPhone XR;
- iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max;
- iPhone SE (2016/2020).
