Since its introduction in 2010, the iPad was positioned as a replacement computer. Tablet cope with a certain range of tasks, but honestly call it a full replacement for the PC has been difficult. iPad is well suited for content consumption, entertainment, and work on the go, but some more serious tasks to perform on it was, alas, uncomfortable. With iOS 9 things can change.
Fully migrate their business processes on the iPad have tried many, including some of us. Such noble undertaking inevitably ended in failure due to the various software and hardware limitations. In fact, the "apple" tablet lacked just a few things. Let's try to ask ourselves questions and answering them, to understand what is lacking in iPad before and what will change with the release of iOS 9.
What is lacking in earlier iPad
Advertising Apple rolls beautifully painted us a productive use of iPad by students, musicians, doctors, travelers and representatives of different professions. But in fact, all was not so rosy, especially for those who do not want to change their habits, adjusting to the iPad features. Perversions such as USB-flash drives to transfer the documents and memory cards to expand storage space aside. If you talk sensibly, then the iPad full productive lacked just two things: a comfortable keyboard and the ability to work with multiple applications simultaneously. And if the typing problem could be solved buying the good of Bluetooth-keyboard or installing a third-party, the multitasking, unfortunately, nothing was done about it. Now the situation has changed.
What changed
The above problems exist in the iPad with the first version, but Apple finally heard the pleas of users (and maybe, just decided to "kill" all these "killers" iPad). In iOS 9 screen keyboard is much more comfortable and at the same time have the opportunity to work with two apps on the screen. At first glance, it's not that steep changes, but in fact they will have a huge impact on the work.
Keyboard
On the keyboard, a number of additional QuickType bar keys, through which you can not distracted by unnecessary movement, copy and paste text, use the formatting and adding investments. In addition to this there was the so-called trackpad mode: using two-finger gestures to move the cursor and highlight text. Ordeal was over - now only need to touch two fingers to the keyboard and you can quickly move the cursor to the desired location, whether the adjacent word line or the previous paragraph. Tap with two fingers while holding as simply allows you to select a piece of text, and then copy or cut it by pressing in QuickType bar.
But that's not all! Owners of Bluetooth-keyboard can now use keyboard shortcuts. With their help, you can call the search screen to switch between applications and perform other activities provided by software developers. In applications that support this feature, you can press the Command, Option, or Control keys to display a list of all available commands.
multitasking
Multitasking on the iPad also become much better. First, change the application switching menu itself: Now we no longer have an icon or thumbnail, and full previews, which are convenient to browse and flip through. Secondly, there were regimes Slide Over and "Picture in Picture". And, most importantly, the long-awaited Split View mode allows you to keep two active on-screen applications, and at the same time working with them.
With the "Picture in Picture" and so everything is clear: it is a function of displaying the mini-player window or FaceTime-ring, which can be changed in size and attach anywhere on the screen on top of it application.
More interesting for us Slide Over mode. This is an opportunity to return to the already-running applications, swipe from the edge of the screen and open any of them in a small panel on the right. It will be an active and fully functional, while the main application goes into the background. When working with Slide-Over-application will be finished, you will simply need to brush away the panel back to the edge of the screen and continue to work with the main application, which takes all the screen again space.
And finally the most delicious - Split View mode. In contrast to the above, it is available only on iPad Air 2, the computing power of which can handle two active application. Split View works in the following way: swipe from the edge of the screen call Slide Over menu, select the desired application and click on the divider to fix the second program on the screen. We then get two active application, holding 70 and 30% of the screen, respectively. To start the 50/50 mode, simply pull the splitter, dividing the screen in two.
How will this affect the user experience
To say that the new multitasking feature did work on the iPad easier and more productive - it does not say anything. Tablet functionality is increased by the order. Get at least use my script.
The problem solved by typing the purchase of Bluetooth-keyboard, so I was most irritated by the inability to keep two applications screen, in my case - a text editor and browser. I rarely write lyrics in "single task" mode due to the need to check the facts, look for related information or spy in dictionaries in translation. By this you can safely add a work conversation, Twitter, email, calls FaceTime and Skype. With all this work on the iPad turns into a juggling windows applications and hell.
Whether dealing with the iPad iOS 9. Open Safari and iA Writer in Split View 50/50 mode and start working. It's a message or email - open in Slide Over Telergam or Spark, answer and return to Safari and iA Writer. It should be on time to translate messenger in full-screen mode - pull for the separator. Replying to a message - Shift it back to the "shelf" sidebar. Someone called for FaceTime - video is turned off in a mini-window and respond, if necessary, working simultaneously in a browser or other application. Conveniently? Not that word!
Now imagine a 12-inch iPad Pro with a screen that supports Force Touch. What will work simultaneously with two applications on it? That's right. It's almost a laptop, only lighter, autonomous and versatile. The era of post-PC. And even if we do it has not yet entered, the already closely approached.
For whom is suitable
Of course, such a post-PC suit is not for everyone as a working tool: professional and some highly specialized tasks it will not solve. But for most users, whose job it is to view and edit documents, drafting tables, correspondence, surfing the Internet and other simple tasks, iPad is perfect tool.
Time of post-PC is not yet come to appreciate the advantages can not yet all, and old habits to struggle very difficult, but change is inevitable, the process has already started, and in the near future iPad will replace the majority of the computer users. Do you agree? Or you think differently?
