Terminal is a handy utility that works on UNIX computers (this includes Linux and macOS) in the same way as the command line on Windows. Although for most users, working with the terminal looks like something incredibly complicated, in fact it has a lot of fun functions - the main thing is to know how to call them. Here are five such possibilities.
1. Share coffee to your computer
If your Mac goes to sleep after a certain amount of time by default, but you want it to stay on, you don't have to completely change the settings for the sake of one time. Just share your caffeine with your computer! And no, for this you do not need to pour anything on the keyboard, just enter in the terminal caffeinate. Until you press Ctrl + C, the computer will not go to sleep.
You can also set the length of time the Mac should stay awake. To do this, enter caffeinate -t Xwhere X is the time in seconds. For example, caffeinate -t 14400 will prevent the computer from shutting down for 4 hours.
2. The fourth episode of "Star Wars" in text graphics
Surprisingly, you can view the entire New Hope as ASCII graphics. Important: This command requires an internet connection.
- For macOS Sierra and newer: enter nc towel.blinkenlights.nl 23;
- For older versions: enter telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl.
3. Make the terminal talk
Have a lot of free time, but no one to chat with? You can always talk to your computer. To do this, in the terminate enter the command say (text to be said, no brackets) and press Enter. While this is probably not the most fun entertainment, this team is great for making fun of your friends.
You can set up a voice that will speak text if you open Accessibility → Speak Text in System Preferences. You can choose male or female and change its speed.
4. Check the weather forecast
While the commands described here are mostly for fun and jokes, this one can be really useful. Enter in terminal curl http://wttr.in/and press Enter, and you will receive a detailed weather forecast for three days, the city will be determined automatically.
5. Endless cycle
This function is perhaps only suitable for joking with friends - or for taking funny screenshots (although it was created as a stress test of equipment). The command leads to continuous spam with the same phrase of your choice. Please note: the process is resource intensive, so be careful.
If you decide to do this with a friend's computer, make sure that he looks at the screen as soon as possible: a few hours of work can overload the processor and even lead to irreversible consequences.
Do you understand the risk and are you ready to try? Here's how to do it:
- Run the Terminal utility.
- Enter yes and the phrase or word to be repeated (for example, yes Lifehacker), and press Enter.
- To stop the process, press Ctrl + C.
6. Add sound when charging is connected
Few people know, but Mac can actually make the same sound when plugged in as iOS devices. To do this, use the following command:
defaults write com.apple. PowerChime ChimeOnAllHardware -bool TRUE; open /System/Library/CoreServices/PowerChime.app &
To mute sound, enter
defaults write com.apple. PowerChime ChimeOnAllHardware -bool FALSE; killall PowerChime
