YouTube user Adam Maciaszek has posted an updated version of the silent 1902 film Voyages to the Moon, directed by Georges Méliès. The painting is presented for the first time in color and 4K resolution.
And this is how the original looks like:
The author of the video said that scans from a hand-painted film of the original were used to "paint" the tape - it was in this form that the picture was first shown. To scale up to 4K, the enthusiast used AI, which also removed the grain of the original material and added sharper lines to objects.
Alas, modern technologies have not coped with everything. The shortcomings of the first scene, in which the astronomers argue, have not been eliminated. As well as some other small details.
"Modernizing" old films has recently become a trend in the light of development neural networks. Earlier we wrote about Denis Shiryaev, who released The Arrival of a Train, 1896, in 4K resolution at 60 frames.
