Rahim Davletkaliev
Entrepreneur, CEO Hekslet. He graduated from Carleton University with a Computer Science program, Software and Computing Stream. A well-known blogger, podcaster. He talks a lot about programming and learning foreign languages.
What do you do in your work?
I work in the team of the educational project Hekslet. Performs the role of CEO. But, in fact, right now, at an early stage, which means that I am doing a little: I bring the minimum changes to the code to communicate with users, I discuss with your colleagues the development of new features, working with investors, write articles, do my homework, manage our accounts in social networks, study the legal and economic Aspects. In short, learning. Because Hekslet - a start-up and start-up - it is a constant learning.
How does your workplace?
Most often, I work from home and my workplace is very simple - a table, a chair and a laptop.
I love that the table was great, although it uses only a small part of it.
The todo-list I have a task on every Sunday "clear the table and clean up Mac».
A week on the table accumulate paper, notebooks, tableware and dust, and in all sorts of computer files, so at the end of the week I it clears. On the one hand, I like the first hours after clearing: everything minimalistic and tidy. But on the other - a mess I clearly associated with productive work, so the soul as something pleasant and relaxing, when the table is filled up.
My computer last five years - a MacBook Pro Mid-2010 15 ". From upgrades - SSD instead of a standard hard drive, RAM, and expanded to 8 GB. Of course, you want the car more bright and retina, but perhaps wait when my company will enter the IPO. ;)
Since work on the startup can not dwell on the go, I always use a mobile phone. Until the end of last year, an iPhone 4, and then went on the Nexus 5.
Old iPhone is already unable to cope with the modern software (this is, incidentally, an absolute nonsense and unfair), and I was tied to the Google infrastructure (both in private life and at work), so I decided to try Android. Transition satisfied.
To record audio (such as video tutorials) using different microphone Rode Podcaster.
The trips are always afraid to take it to the luggage, so it was not even a single time to the inspection was not necessary to explain the purpose of the large and heavy pieces of iron.
What software use?
operating system - Mac OS X Yosemite. In virtualke lives for Ubuntu.
A little miss Snow Leopard, all of the following versions of OS X brings more sadness than joy, and the bulk of the new features I do not use. Always turn off the notification, the meaning of the drawer with notifications and widgets do not understand.
A lot of luck - after switching on Spotify and Android you can forget about iTunes.
Browser - Chrome. But, as our project - a web service that I have installed all possible browsers. On the phone, of course, also Chrome.
post office - Gmail web interface; on the phone - a standard application Googley Gmail. A few years used the standard Mail.app, then more than a year - Airmail, but then decided to get off on the web interface. almost never works search as I need to in e-mail programs.
Messengers... Oh, how I hate the messenger!
Even a bit nostalgic for the days when everyone was or ICQ, for example, Jabber. Now it accounts for every day use Skype, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Viber, Hangouts. It seems not forgotten anything. BUT! More "VKontakte" is sometimes written. It's an addiction!
Different people sit in different messengers, and every month there are new "killer X". In this case, no mass messenger which would be a really good and comfortable. Everywhere his troubles.
The only thing I'm happy - it Slack. We use it within the team, and it's just a fairy tale. Its main feature - integration. Therefore, we are not leaving Slack, learn about new ticket support, the changes in the code, the process deployment of new versions Heksleta the server about errors and problems in a system of references in social networks and etc.
To store and writing notes I use Evernote, or rather a third-party client minimalistic Alternote. This is probably the fifth attempt to use Evernote, because monstrosity and standard client Ping fought off any desire to use it.
For a long time used Notational Velocity (I wrote on this blog), and Evernote is applied only for the storage of useful articles and pictures.
computer text is unreadable. In the phone are Feedly (for RSS) and Pocket (for pending items). If the article is quite large, then send it to the Kindle.
become a user From the beginning, You Need a Budget, great Program for conducting budget.
Text editor for code - Atom, and for articles - Alternote.
Sometimes I play chess on lichess.org or HIARCS Chess Explorer on your computer.
The second year of every day I keep a diary. first I used Day OneAnd then moved on to Journal App (By Journey).
How do you organize your time?
A few years used Things, Then a little OmniFocusAnd after the transition to Android has become the user Todoist.
In it live permanent projects (for example, "work with the authors Hekslete") and the so-called routine: recurring tasks like "do yoga 'or' clear the table."
Recently, I want all possible ways to reduce screen time, so consider switching to an analog system like on paper Bullet Journal.
What's your daily routine?
I get up at about ten, I go in two nights. Some do not have a strict regime.
I live on sensations.
Of course, from time to time starts to torment the conscience, and the inner voice says: "You have to observe the regime! You need to get up earlier! ". But it seems to deal with them is not worth it.
Get enough sleep, everything in time, so that's kind of good.
What place sport occupies in your life?
In the warm season run, and recently I started doing simple exercises from yoga at home.
Previously, a lot of time conducted on road bike, but with the move to the city, owned vehicles, abandoned this hobby.
Is there a place in your paper work?
On the table there is always notepads and notebooks, I was constantly making notes and planning on paper and then translate into a digital format.
Aims to abandon the paper and there was not.
It is clear that with all the bureaucracy wants to mop up on the Internet, but when it comes to reading and writing, I, on the contrary, want to go back to the paper.
Layfhakerstvo from Rahim Davletkalieva
I can recommend three artistic:
- «Dune"Frank Herbert.
- «Chronicles of Amber"Roger Zelazny. I re-read, it seems for the fourth time. The most alluring universe of fiction books.
- «Hyperion"Dan Simmons. Probably the worst book I've read.
... and three non-fiction books:
- «Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs». Probably the best book on programming.
- «Purpose. The process of continuous improvement"Eliyahu Goldratt. Addictive brain and reduce a business affair.
- «Of course, you're joking, Mr. Feynman!». Autobiography of Richard Feynman.
I love paper books, but I prefer to read in English, so it is often read with Kindle. For PDF sometimes use the very first iPad, it copes with this task well.
It has long ceased to listen to podcasts, and there's nothing I can not recommend. Although a few years ago I wrote a huge number of podcasts. I can advise "programming philosophy"Which we recorded with the participants of the project Hekslet and plan to resume in the near future.
Three videokasty:
- C.G.P. Grey - a wonderful video about the human structure Features: countries, borders, books, political system.
- Engineer Guy - stories experienced engineer on a variety of mechanisms: clocks, household appliances, vehicles, and much more.
- Food Wishes - great recipes for tasty (but not always healthy) food.
Is there a dream configuration?
Something like an operating system from the movie Her. No, not to fall in love with the voice of Scarlett Johansson, and to be able to do everything that can be done for the screen and keyboard, but without a screen - voice. For example, you walk in the forest, received the letter, listened to him, zaguglit author, learned all that was necessary, said the scheduled event. While all these Siri or Google Now - a pitiful semblance of sense of control and freedom that you want to have.
Now all the interaction with the computer seem to me a terrible primitivism. I press buttons like a typewriter, slide your finger to some fictional pointer to get the button.
Ideally, I do not want to have no interface at all. Just some plugins for the brain to send and receive information without computers and screens in general. Well, something I got carried away. I go for a slide button on. :)
Thanks for attention!
