How to run 2 Dropbox client on Mac
Macos / / December 26, 2019
Dropbox is deservedly the most popular cloud storage files. It is convenient for use on computers and mobile devices, it makes it possible to properly expand the space for storage without any cash outlay, but to run two clients on the same Mac - you can not. Surely the developer imposed such a restriction to complicate manipulation of khaljavnogo increase the storage size, but at the same time, such a function would help to all those who use different accounts for work and personal use. But do not be sad, because to get around this restriction is still possible.
Idea
We will create your own application-clone of Dropbox. We will need the Mac (who would have thought!), Which we put Dropbox client (let it be a work account). Now we think over the location for the repository for the second account (let it be a personal account for their own use). Suppose the first account we have is on the credit default address. You can create a folder for the second account there and call it a Dropbox-personal.
create a clone
To do this, perfectly suitable Automator. In practice, launch Automator to shell script would look like this:
If you want to name the folder otherwise, simply replace the Dropbox-personal in your name.
Step by step to create your own applications:
- launch Automator and create a new document using a template Application
- add the Run Shell Script: open the Library -> Utilities and drag action Run Shell Script in workspace
- remove the default text from the window of the script and paste this code:
bash
HOME = $ HOME / Dropbox-personal /Applications/Dropbox.app/Contents/MacOS/Dropbox &
- We test the application in Automator, clicking Run in the upper right corner
- save the application: in Automator, select File -> Save (name generate your imagination)
It makes sense to keep the app in a folder that (Dropbox-personal) was set up for him.
In principle, this process can be considered completed. You run a custom application that come under his personal Dropbox account and enjoy.
Change the application icon
The presence of two of the same icons may confuse the user. Fortunately, Dropbox allows you to change the appearance of icons on a black and white through the Preferences -> General -> Use black and white menu bar icons.
Now we have two different icons, and it will be harder to get confused.
Autoplay
Another small detail. You'll likely want to make a custom Dropbox application to be started automatically with the system. Make it too simple: open the System Preferences -> Accounts, select the tab Login Items, press the "+" and find we created Dropbox app.
