Can career and wealth to make us happy: the view of the practicing psychologist
Work And Study / / December 25, 2019
Now all alone and are busy making lists of their goals. Lists - it's good. And the goal - it is also pretty good. Especially those related to life in general. But this time we will not talk about happiness, friends and family, and sort through career goals. Something you probably already know about something, possibly guess. But some aspects of the issue are very surprised.
Is it true that the career achievements and a tidy sum in the accounts make people completely happy and independent? Is there an end to the "full of happiness I was missing some 10 000 100 000... one million dollars?" Is there a light at the end of his career? On the relationship between career, wealth and happiness is very interesting talks Fredric Newman (Fredric Neuman), Doctor of Medicine and director of the Center for anxiety and phobias in a hospital White Plains.
During his practice Fredrik met many interesting people. Many of them he had seen at the beginning of a dizzying career and talked with them in 10-15 years after that.
Career goals and career myths
As I said, we Fredrik was a wonderful opportunity to observe the many talented and promising people. They studied at prestigious schools, have been reported in the prestigious colleges and within a few years of study began working in prestigious law firms. Their income was from 130 to 180 thousand dollars a year, and they practiced it 70 hours in Week. They did not have time to stop and think about where it is a road on which they stepped. What will happen at the end, and whether it will bring satisfaction? At least in the form in which they imagine.
Job satisfaction is usually not tied to the achievement of specific objectives.
When Fredric Newman asked his interlocutors about the specific purposes they are usually answered something like "I want to earn enough money to not have to worry about them anymore," or "I want to be successful and to be recognized, "or" I want so high up the corporate ladder to do whatever I see fit, and to no one else could tell me what do". That is, most would either be very rich and successful that no one else does not depend on, or start their own business or to become president of the company where they started career.
These goals seem fairly reasonable, but unfortunately, for the most part they simply unattainable. That is, most of the people are in the mad pursuit of a mirage, without even time out to stop and think well. They are always busy, because if you stop and will not plow for 14 hours a day, will not earn all the money and will not become president of the company.
What happens after 10 or 15 years at this rate, if we add more and the crisis of 40 years? According to Fredrik, one achieves goals, someone - no, but no one gets the promised happiness and sense of security. Why? Because on a large period of time is more important attitude to the process than achieving results. It is one thing - to endure wildest stress for something within a few months or a year. Another thing - to live permanently.
And another important point: do not forget to spend time not only to work but also to his family, his hobbies and, of course, health. Otherwise, you can wake up 50 years president of a large company, but it is broken and alone.
Freedom, independence and success
Many people believe that money will bring them independence. In fact, the opposite is true! And only the rich know this unpleasant truth. Money will never give you the desired freedom. And the round sum in the accounts, the heavier the chains.
One of the patients Fredrik, the owner of the state of $ 30 million, complained that he could not afford a divorce. He absolutely seriously concerned about the fact that my wife and I have shared quite a round sum.
When you have made a fortune and earned a reputation, you feel successful person... The first time. But then it passes. To constantly feel cool, it is necessary to move forward and upward to new heights. When you are in society successful peopleYou become ordinary, the same as everybody else.
Independence - is something to aspire to majority. And for some reason, this majority thinks that it is the presence of a large amount of money and position in society allow a person to be completely independent and do only what you want. In fact, this is a very profound mistake.
The more money and higher status, the responsibility lies more on the man.
Perhaps a simple contract soldiers think that the commanders are free to make decisions and act as they see fit. But in fact above them there is always someone else. Above them are the generals who control the policy and so on. In fact, these soldiers are much freer generals. But they realize it only when they themselves receive the title.
Happiness
And now the main question: whether a successful career built on a desire to earn a lot of money or take a high position, make a person happy and free? Probably not. Most of these careerists are unhappy.
But if it is correct to define priorities in life, do not forget about the world that is beyond the boundaries of the office, and get pleasure from the work process, not only by the distant and illusive results, then you have everything will be good. ;)
So says psychologist Fredric Newman, and his conclusions are based on years of observation and practice. To me it is difficult to judge this, because I've never been career-. Of course, this does not mean that I do not want to achieve excellence in what they do, and do something really worthwhile. But this is more about the process than the result. If I do not like something, if I do it through the power, neither of which happiness and satisfaction from work and can be no question. Therefore, I find it hard to imagine how one can endure something like that for 5, 10, 20 years.
And that your work makes you happy? For which you work?
