How to calibrate your iPhone battery

Why do it

Unlike older NiCd and NiMH batteries, Li-polymer are not subject to memory effect and they can charge whatever you like. However, from time to time, such batteries could and should be calibrated.

To a greater extent this applies to older devices with worn batteries. Calibration helps smartphone correctly display the charge level, and slightly increase the maximum capacity and prolong the battery life.

As far as - a separate issue, to which the answer at the end. Frankly, I was determined quite skeptical, but I'll tell you that for nothing.

How to prepare your iPhone

Before proceeding to the calibration process, you will need to disable some features and settings. This is necessary in order to reduce energy consumption and to fully discharge battery. Otherwise, it is likely that the iPhone simply shut down by 20-30% charge.

1. disable Location Services

4. Reduce the brightness of the display

How to calibrate the battery

Now you are ready to calibrate. Be patient, because you need to do two full-charge discharge cycle, and it can take several hours or even all day.

Step 1. Discharging iPhone

The first thing you need to completely discharge the battery to shut down the smartphone. There are two options: just use it in normal mode, or speed up the process by running some long 4K video YouTube and turn the sound at full volume.

Step 2. We are waiting for three o'clock

By default, iPhone is turned off when only a few percent of the charge. This is done in order to save your data and applications to conduct proper shutdown. In this case, the battery is still not completely discharged.

The only way to use up the remaining charge - wait. At least three hours, but the longer, the better. If you have time, leave the smartphone for a few hours, and ideally at all at night.

Step 3. Charges iPhone

To test these methods, I tried to calibrate its own iPhone 6sWhich for almost two years. In the battery yet even 300 cycles, but the capacity has fallen below 70% of the factory. CoconutBattery tool showed that the current capacity of 1170 mAh, while the new it was 1715 mAh.

After the calibration procedure, I again checked the battery performance in CoconutBattery. To my surprise, the maximum capacity increased to 1394 mAh, which is more than 200 mAh. In comparison with the capacity of the factory is already 81% and not 68%. It turns out, the effect is still there. And it is quite significant.

In normal use, it is also noticeable. Previously, even in energy-saving mode, my iPhone barely hold out until the evening. After calibration, the smartphone runs quietly until the end of the day without forced power save mode.

The interest charge is not jumping like crazy and displayed accurately. What's more enjoyable on the iPhone frost off only when the low battery, rather than 70-80%, as before.
