How to work with tabbed browser even faster: 3 additional hack
Browsers / / December 19, 2019
We already wrote how to make easy work with many tabs in the browser. In this article, we will continue this theme and give three more additional Board.
Since I started writing for Layfhakera, I have to spend at the computer up to six hours a day. 90% of the time I open an Internet browser. I am constantly looking for interesting information, read, analyze, compare, write and communicate on the web. All this leads me to open at the same time a large number of tabs.
But the work is fraught with a lot of tabs three consequences:
- The computer starts freezes, because each open tab eats up part of the RAM.
- Clipped captions on the tabs make it difficult to navigate, because already visually unclear what and for what the tab is located.
- The tabs are lost and forgotten, if forced out beyond the visible screen area.
Here's how it looks:
If you are like me and are faced with the same problems, in this article I will share a few solutions that help me to deal with these unpleasant moments.
Immediately I say, that my main browser - Firefox, and spare - Chrome. Therefore, in this article I give recommendations only for those browsers.
1. How to open a lot of tabs and not to overload the computer
We have already discussed that each open tab eats up part of the memory. This means that the more tabs open, the less free memory remains. The less memory, the slower your computer is responding to commands.
What can you do to avoid this? I installed a special extension for the browser, which is able to unload inactive tabs from memory and save system resources. To restore a tab, I just clicked on it.
But the plug-ins that allow me to do it:
Once the plugin is installed, just right click on the tab and select Unload tab. It will keep a tab open in your browser, but will free the memory.
It is said that there are extensions, which are discharged inactive tabs automatically, rather than a mouse click, it makes BarTab Lite. I tried several such extensions, but faced with the problems that forced me to remove them.
For example, the extension UnloadTab unloads from memory tab right away, as soon as it becomes inactive. I found it inconvenient for himself. A setting that allows you to select a period of time to unload an inactive tab, I have for some reason does not work (by the way, other people are writing about the same in a review).
Another extension - Suspend Tab — I was surprised that simply does not allow to close the "suspended" tab. For this we have to restart the computer, which is very inconvenient.
Therefore, the choice I made in favor BarTab Lite.
On Layfhakere there article about this extension, therefore, be considered in detail it will not.
So, if you keep the characteristic open more than 10 tabs, causing the speed of your browser falls, I recommend to try my advice.
2. How to easily navigate through a large number of tabs
When too many open tabs, it is difficult to find among them the one that is needed, because the headlines are unreadable. I solved this problem by placing the tabs in a vertical menu.
Today, most large-format monitors. This means that the area around the edges of the screen are often empty. And if so, then why not use it to display the tabs?
Firstly, so much more tabs may be in the visible portion of the screen (which means that we will not forget about them). Secondly, the presence of additional space will retain titles readable, and it is much easier to navigate.
Here's how it looks:
At home I have set up a vertical tab bar by expanding Tree Style Tab for Firefox. But extensions with similar functionality to Chrome: vTabs, Sidewise Tree Style Tabs.
3. How not to lose important group of tabs
Sometimes there are situations where you want to save all open tabs for later use. For example, you gather information about a certain brand cars, such as Honda Civic. Opened multiple tabs on the topic and want to save them to return in the future, instead of looking all over again.
Click "Save the current session", sets a friendly name Honda Civic - now you can go back to these tabs at any time. Very comfortably.
For these purposes, I use the extension, which is called Session Manager. This extension is available as an for FirefoxAnd for Chrome.
In addition to preserving the group tabs, Session Manager can save list of closed tabs. That is, if you accidentally close a tab, it is possible to quickly restore the right of the control panel.
Do you have anything to add?
I can not claim that the solution proposed by me - the only ones. This is just what I use at work. If you have something to add to the article, write about it in the comments below.
