A few weeks ago I ran a marathon eighth. But I can hardly be called the world's top expert on the run. I've never been strictly adhered to the training schedule, did not hire a coach, did not enter into a running club. And I did not run very fast: my personal record - just 3:49:00. But I always finish.
Preparation is important, but even more is helping me right approach, which applies in other spheres of life.
I call it the law of equal force, and it is surprisingly simple: no matter what trials throws your life, apply an equal amount of effort.
According to my theory of progress for a long period of time can be significant, may not be visible, but the main thing - that in the end you come to the desired result and feel better.
This approach is important because it will give you confidence, when will the long-term test: you will be able to keep everything under control. Of course, it is impossible to know for sure when it will be difficult, and when - is easy. But you will be able to decide how to respond to the ups and downs.
And here's how to properly apply the law of equal effort in everyday life. We consider this approach in three situations: when you need to run a marathon, start a business or build relationships.
1. Determine your "eternal" pace
Each long-distance runner knows how important tempo. The idea is simple: when you need to go a certain distance, it is necessary to adhere to the required speed. If you succeed, you will come to the finish line in time.
If you move too fast, there is a risk of burn out and either do not reach the finish or not to show the best results. Every marathon runner will confirm: running at a speed higher than the target pace, it will lead to torture.
It does not matter how slowly you go, as long as the stop.
Confucius, the ancient Chinese thinker and philosopher
I know its "eternal" pace: a mile in 9 minutes 45 seconds. At this rate, I feel that I can run as... forever, no matter where I run and how much you need to run. For the marathon - a race where time is limited - my optimum rate to be 8 minutes 45 seconds per mile. If I stand this pace, it will finish and I will be proud of the result.
The main idea of ββall of the above is as follows: to finish the race, you need to make an equal effort for a long time.
The idea of ββ"eternal" tempo applies to every sphere of life: knowing it, you'll take right decisions and overcome a serious test.
Business pace
Imagine that you want to open a business. To begin, ask yourself: is a passion that you would like to devote a lifetime, or a project that you are going to sell in a few years? The tempo will be different depending on the purpose.
If you want to engage in this business all my life, you need to choose the pace that you can keep forever. No, it does not mean that you will not be able to do something else in the future. But if you do not immediately determine its "eternal" pace, you quickly to spend power and want to drop everything.
If you want to sell the project in a few years, ask yourself two questions.
- What should be done in the next two years?
- What pace is necessary to adhere to finish everything on time?
You may find it difficult to force myself to go to the goal, but at least you'll know the right pace. So, to understand when you are moving too fast (there is a risk be reduced to a pulp), and when - is too slow (there is a risk not to reach the goal).
Pace for relations
Let's say you're trying to build a relationship with a new boyfriend or partner. Of course, there is no relationship end date, which you know in advance. Therefore important pace that you can keep all the time.
If you act too quickly, you may lose interest in another person. Tired or your partner, who needs personal space. If you act too slowly, you disappoint the lack of progress or another person may think that you are indifferent to it.
No matter what you're working: preparing for a marathon, business development, relationships or anything else. After determining the correct tempo, you can get what you want, at the right time.
2. When the tempo is necessary to deviate
Knowing your "eternal" pace, you realize how much effort you need to make to achieve your goal. For example, if I want to beat your personal best in the marathon, I have to keep the pace equal to a minimum of 8 minutes 44 seconds per mile, throughout the race.
The problem is that in the life of a lot of unpredictability. And here comes to the aid of the law on equal efforts.
In the marathon, there are physical complications: uphill you run slower. Or may suddenly appear joint pain. There are also psychological complexity. At the beginning of the marathon you are surrounded by energetic people, you feel the excitement and ready to run 26 miles at a pace of a sprint. By the end of hard for you and you are surrounded by the same emaciated people. Because of this, I want to run slower, but the finish line is almost here.
Novice runner usually does not attach importance pace, despite the fact that you must at least try to stick to it. Beginner starts without realizing worried and runs too fast at the start, he just spends all the forces that would be useful to him in the end. Or begins to accelerate at a difficult ascent, when it would be logical to slow down. This scenario leads to rapid burnout and poor results in the end.
I try to apply equal force throughout the race. In the beginning, when all dispersed, I restrain myself, these forces need me later. Toward the end, I use this energy, and the rest of the runners begin to slow down.
Last but not least, I try to keep pace in spite of everything. If I see before me a lift, I slowly and quietly running up the hill. On the descent I start to run faster, to compensate for the time difference.
The law of equal effort for business
Starting a business like a rollercoaster ride. Sometimes everything goes well. And the next day - "how things badly, I want to drop everything."
When there are problems, it is logical that you want to work hard. Carry out the work more time to exercise willpower. But here's what happens next: either you feel exhausted and give up, or you are so weakens and you need a lot of time to recharge, you are again slipping into problems.
It is a vicious circle: you work hard, when you need to relax and slow down when a breakthrough is needed. Such unhealthy behavior does not bring you closer to your goal.
We need to do the opposite. When the going gets tough times - the hills, keep working in the same rhythm. So of course you will not achieve much progress. But you still have the strength to take off, when everything will change for the better - on the descent.
The law of equal effort to the relationship
Think of any romantic comedy when in a relationship something goes wrong, it's time to become more active and direct them in the right direction.
But anyone with a long happy relationship will tell you, real life does not work. You spend all his strength, trying to cope with the problems, and can no longer feel happier when they return to a normal life. This is the main cause of the next crisis.
But what if instead of having to empty their moral resources, you slow down a bit? Try to approach to solving problems calmly, steadily. When everything is back to normal, you use those powers to make your relationship better.
It is extremely difficult to make progress in a relationship when attacking hard times. Lost trust, it is easy to hurt each other's feelings, and you will go into a protective mode. The more effort you apply, the worse it gets. But if you carefully try to return to normal relations, it will be able to make more progress. And when you are happy and are moving in the right direction, difficult periods become less and less.
3. When the law is equal to the force does not work
The law of equal effort brings rare, but there are circumstances when it is not necessary to use.
- Existential risk. When you are on the verge of collapse, the law of equal efforts will not help. This can be a major crisis in your company. Or husband / wife / business partner sent to the door right now. Pull yourself together and fight - and will deal with the consequences later.
- Severe burn. If you are already a spent force and ready to drop everything, take a break. No, you will not stick to the pace, but at least you get to the finish line. Attempts to deal with a strong burnout usually do not work.
- Finals in sight. On the law of equal effort should be forgotten immediately as soon as you loomed before the final. When you see the finish line, you do not need to store power for later use. Let adrenaline domchat you through even faster. Yes, after the finish, you will collapse in exhaustion, but what a difference?
If you are highly motivated person, first law of equal effort you will find something unnatural and even wrong. But if you try to stick with it at least for a while, you will see that it works well in many different areas of life.
It works because you put the same effort, but know how to combine them with uncontrollable circumstances. You do not rush to the fight unnecessarily. You stay happy and motivated throughout the process. And when you are happy and motivated, you are more likely to succeed and achieve their goals.
