How many times have you had to explain over the phone how to get to any place that does not have the exact address? How many times have you searched for the desired point of interest in a huge park or friends at a crowded beach? Now, these problems will be left behind: in Google Maps has a new feature that lets you find anywhere in the area, not even having a specific address.
Most recently, we introduced you to the project What3wordsWhich threatened to make a revolution in navigation. Let me remind you that its developers have offered to split the entire earth's surface into small squares 3 × 3 meter and assign each of them a unique address consisting of the three available for storing words. The idea of beautiful.
Google has also attended to a problem of huge spaces that do not have a clear address, but came to its decision a few on the other side. In Google developed built on top of the existing system of GPS-coordinates called Open Location Codes. It is a kind of translator ordinary coordinates in a short numeric code that is no longer than a phone number. This code, in Google's opinion, it is much more convenient for storage and transmission of any communication channels.
Currently it is running a special siteOn which you can find a digital code in the system Open Location Codes for any location. To do this, you simply need to find the map you are interested in a point and combine it with a red rectangle in the center. After that, the bottom display shows the code of this place. It can be of two types: short and long. Long a complete description of the location, and shortened - only local coordinates and can be used only if you are currently disclosed map of the area.
In addition, just yesterday, Google updated mapping applications and implemented in support of these search locations via digital address system Open Location Codes. Now you can enter in the Google Maps search bar in the browser or on a smartphone, for example, 8GRGFPJ3 code + QM and see, where is the corresponding point, and also to learn its GPS-coordinates, if it needed. It is obvious that in the near future support Open Location Codes will be introduced in other programs and services of the company.
Google this initiative is a great way to solve the actual problem is really when a huge amount of places on the planet does not have a specific address, and the current system of GPS-coordinates too complex for ordinary user. Personally, I like the way the proposed What3words, but given the experience and the power of Google, most likely, their project soon will prevail.
And what of the new systems geopositioning would prefer you?
