Google Photos - competitor iOS standard photographic film and unlimited storage for photos

Yesterday's Google I / O It was quite uninteresting. During the whole presentation went public only a few times in ecstasy. One of them - when introduced Google Photos. And it's not so much about the functionality of the application, as on free and unlimited storage for photos and videos. We looked at the app and find out how it works.

Externally, the application is very similar to a standard photographic film in iOS. Blame Google of copying is not necessary - I do not know what can come up with a new interface to display photos. There are three grid: "The Day" (Photos and video of the day), "month" and "Compact". Alas, the iPhone 5 scrolling all nets except Compact, hangs.

At the presentation said that the app automatically detects faces and creates a separate collection of photos for each person. In The VergeFor example, for this to work, though not perfect. I, no matter how I tried, did not work.

Unlimited storage is not unlimited, as is said from the scene. There is a limit on the size: for photos - up to 16 megapixels, video - Full HD. Members on Twitter say that the application is still compresses pictures almost tripled.

Still, Google Photos strongly squeezed material 16 megapixel photos with LG G4 I weigh about 5-6 MB a piece, after loading in Photos - 2MB.

Copying to the cloud only works when the application is active. As soon as you close your Google Photos, synchronization is suspended and resumed at the next opening. The files are copied quickly, but because of the limitations mentioned you have to keep the app running for a long time, depending on how many photos you have.

Another feature application - "Assist me." This is a virtual assistant that creates collages from photos, and video collection. You choose the photos and "Assist" add transition effects, zoom and pleasant music. By the way, music can also be changed.

By installing this application, I do not cast the outcome at which I stop to use a standard film and move on to the Google Photos. That will not happen. On my old iPhone 5 application works worse, and I see it only as a mashup editor and perfect cloud for photos. For more should not count.
