At TiECON conference surfaced some interesting details related to the previous Akamai - their shared head and co-founder Tom Leighton (Tom Leighton) during his speech.
In early 1999, the company Akamai was only a modest start-ups and has not yet produced on a commercial basis of its revolutionary delivery service web content. However, in developed Akamai Technologies saw the prospect of Steve Jobs, who has been impressed by the work of the service: when Apple.com website appeared exclusive trailer Stars Wars Episode I, the traffic has grown to such an extent that on 31 March the site "I lay down." Akamai servers saved the day, giving them an opportunity to show the trailer for everyone. The next day, Jobs decided to contact Paul Sagan, who was then head of Akamai. It is not known exactly what they had to say to each other, but at some point the dialogue Jobs announced his Akamai's desire to buy, what Sagan decided to answer that just put the phone in the middle of conversation. Why? The reason was that Jobs called April 1 - Sagan thought it was an April Fool's joke, he just did not believe in what he says with Steve Jobs.
What happened next? Later that same month, Akamai launched its service on a commercial basis, and in June, Apple bought a 5% stake in the company worth $ 12.5 million. Thus, Akamai's has not been fully acquired by Apple or anyone else, and in October of the same year the first public sale of shares of the company laid the foundation for what Akamai has become one of the largest and most prominent technology companies in the Boston moment. Paul Sagan, CEO of Akamai has been since 2005, but at the beginning of the year in this position he was replaced by Tom Leighton and Sagan remained as executive vice-president of the company.
I wonder how history would have developed if Jobs called on April 2 ...
