And today we have something interesting. Upon learning of the results of the latest Apple Design Award, we quickly contacted have not yet departed from the joy developer Fontcase Omvli Peter (Pieter Omvlee) and interviewed him.
Greetings, Peter.
Please introduce yourself to our readers. Just a couple of words.
My name is Peter and I run Omvli Bohemian Coding. We (me), creating applications for Mac and yet two: Fontcase and DrawIt. DrawIt is a program for drawing and Fontcase - font management application.
Bohemian Coding - your main job or more than a hobby?
After a couple of weeks when the training is over, I hope, will be the main job.
Looking at the Mac developer, I always wonder how they refer to their company. Sofa, Rogue Amoeba, Flying Meat... Bohemian Coding refers to something or do you just follow the general fashion "retarded name, great software"?
I do not want to admit it, but the way it is. I did not want to have words like "software", "solutions", "consulting" in the title, etc. Plus get a free domain now available only with a combination of random words.
Why Mac? Now, it seems, all independent developers rushed to the web or write 1,001th Converter "iPhone2iPod" under Windows.
I have never had a particular desire to do anything under the web. I like desktop applications, especially applications for the Mac. The developed application should go well with the others, both in mind and capability. In addition, there are many opportunities to surprise the user what some nice "chips", I like it. I am constantly inspired by some really cool apps for the Mac, about web applications, I like to say I can not.
Of course I use a Mac in their daily work, and the development of a platform that you yourself are going to use it makes sense. In addition, I like the development tools provided by Apple.
Have you ever tried programming on Windows or Linux? What can you say about them?
Linux has never tried it. My first programming experience was associated with the Visual Basic for Windows. After I switched to RealBasic for Mac, but none of it compares to the Objective-C and the Cocoa, on which I am writing.
By the way, congratulations to obtain the Apple Design Award. For you the victory came as a surprise?
Apple says nothing to the winners in advance. As a student I put Fontcase in the category for students. There is, of course, below the competition, however, and only one prize.
I have exhibited applications on Apple Design Award, but never received a response. Therefore, as soon as Apple contacted me to see if I'm really a student, I knew that at least advanced in comparison with the previous year. All I knew is that the chances of me now a little more, although the victory was a pleasant surprise.
Why did you decide to create Fontcase?
Initially, the idea was not mine. Laurent Baumann (Laurent Baumann) told me the idea, and we decided to develop an application together. He was engaged in the design, and I programmed. Built-in Font Book does not suit him, and I agreed with him. At the presentation of Apple Design Award prize he got also, since I could not attend the WWDC.
How many developers need to screw in a light bulb found his own software company?
In my case alone. I hired people to develop the site, icons, etc. Fontcase created in close collaboration with Laurent Baumann, who was responsible for most of the interface.
You can ask your plan? What other applications can we expect from you?
I am currently working on several projects. And Fontcase DrawIt and, of course, continue to evolve. DrawIt, may turn into a number of projects, I have not decided yet. In addition, I develop a small free utility, SlipCover. I can not exactly call the date of its release, it does not depend only on me.
Thank you very much for answering our questions. Good luck!
But not for that, it is thank you.
