ReadKit: collect all reading in one place
Makradar Technologies / / December 19, 2019
With the closure of Google Reader many have stopped working Reader RSS, use it as an aggregator. Including everyone's favorite Reeder. After trying to search for a replacement set of free and paid software, I stopped my attention on ReadKit. And, as it turned out, not without reason - something really worthwhile. Developers have successfully joined it as an opportunity to use the services of deferred reading, like Instapaper, Pocket and traditional rss-feeds. But, let's take a look at ReadKit closer.
If you are cautious, and before July 1, retained all their subscriptions in OPML-file, they can be easily moved to ReadKit, imported via menu File - Import OPML.
When you first start we kindly asked to add your feeds and sources. There are all popular in the present day platform. Here is the complete list of supported services:
- Instapaper;
- Pocket;
- Readability;
- pinboard;
- Delicious;
- feedly;
- NewsBlur;
- Fever;
- Feed Wrangler;
- Feedbin;
- regular RSS-feed;
Impressive? And all in one place. Adding subscriptions will not take a lot of time, enter the data records and start reading.
ReadKit interface, minimalist and quiet, has a classic three-panel layout (remember Reeder). A list of services (feeds), unread articles, and actually reading panel. The latter is given a large area of the screen, as it should be. The width of the sockets, naturally regulated.
There are four themes, including light, dark, and two alternatives. In conjunction with setting fonts, and display options for customization, more than sufficient. Worth mentioning that the font options allow you to select any of the headset installed on your system. But, traditionally, many beautiful Cyrillic fonts there. From Cyrillic serif fonts, I have chosen for myself Georgia, looks pretty good. It is possible to adjust the line spacing even (!), The width of the text block and its alignment.
For total immersion in reading can hide the navigation panel by clicking on the icon "eye" or using shortcut Cmd + Shift + L. In this case, you will not be distracted from the text, especially if the application is running in full screen mode. By the way, a lot of shortcuts, it is recommended to use them.
Traditionally, briefly to go over the default settings:
- on the Accounts tab, add / delete their subscription;
- Syncing is responsible for the shelf-life read notes, the frequency of update feeds, and includes alerts for new Notification Center in OS X;
- General tab is responsible for grouping, sorting feed, meter on the icon in the dock, and confirm when reading / deleting articles;
- Appearance contains settings in the height of the elements of the navigation bar, and color icons feeds;
- Reading tab helps you configure everything to do with fonts, as well as in any browser, and how to open links;
- Sharing - choose what services are available by clicking the "Share", and it's nice, it is possible to assign to each a shortcut;
- Finally, the last tab Images shows the size of cached images and allows you to clean it;
The exclusive chip ReadKit boasts smart folders. This is just a godsend for users who have a large number of subscriptions to various services. With the given conditions can be easily filtered whole information flow. The variety of available filters will allow you to flexibly configure the smart folder is to collect the information that you need. Example of conditions for filtration:
- content (containing / not containing said text);
- Date;
- header (containing / not containing said text);
- URL;
- services (eg. Only Instapaper, or all but Instapaper);
- read;
- unread;
- It noted;
Using Smart folders opens endless possibilities. I recommend that you take advantage of them, especially since it is not difficult.
Full integration with the "Notification Center" too, is good news, although personally I have, for example, is more distracting. Perhaps people tracking some breaking news, will find this feature useful.
Also, the strong points of ReadKit include the ability to work autonomously, previously stored in the cache all images. Well, the main key feature - collection of content from disparate sources, sophisticated navigation and presenting it in a readable form.
Cons have ReadKit I could not find it. At least for myself. Thoughtful, nice interface. Support for multiple services, usability, exclusive pieces, like smart folders. I use.
