Ada Lovelace
Daughter of George Byron, mathematician and the first programmer in history.
As a child, Ada Lovelace had a habit to retire for a long time in my room and write something. Her mother initially assumed the worst: it seems, daughter went to his father and took up poetry. But poetry is not very interested in Adu - girl designed a flying machine.
In 17 years, Lovelace met with mathematician Charles Babbage, the creator of the first computer. Later, she took a recording of Italian mathematician Luigi Menabrea on Babbage's Analytical Engine, and this work has provided 52 pages of his comments. Among them was the description of the algorithm for calculating Bernoulli numbers - in fact, the first computer program. Ada expressed their views on the possible ways of using the machine Babbage, Lovelace ideas formed the basis of modern programming. She first used the term "cycle", "routine" and "work cell".
Ada LovelaceThe essence and purpose of the machine will vary depending on what kind of information do we invest in it. The machine will be able to write music, draw pictures and show science such ways which we never dreamed of.
The Analytical Engine was never constructed, but works Lovelace received due recognition: in her honor was named the Ada programming language.
Hedy Lamarr
Actress and inventor. The rare case when a stunning beauty combined with a remarkable intellect.
In 1937, Hedy fled from the hateful husband, millionaire arms dealer Fritz Mandl, and moved to the United States. After the Second World War, she is determined to help his adopted country in the fight against the Nazis. Lamarr technical knowledge, backed by the ability to exact sciences, were unnecessarily: actress offered to sell defense loan bonds. To pay 25 thousand dollars got into the bargain beauties kiss, so uncomplicated way the star has collected 7 million.
Everything changed the meeting with the composer George Antheil. Together they began to develop a radio-controlled torpedoes, a signal which can not be intercepted or drown.
The idea was utterly simple and elegant: if enemy ships torpedo jammed signal on the same frequency where it is passed, it means that it is necessary to periodically change the channel, leaping to the frequency frequency.
In 1942, Lamarr and Antheil received patent for a secret communication system, which is presented to the US government.
Appreciated the invention is evaluated after almost half a century when they were declassified some military patents. Lamarr ideas were the basis for the development of systems of spread spectrum communications. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GSM - all these we are to some extent obliged beauty Hedy.
Grace Hopper
Scientist and Rear Admiral US Navy - quite unexpected combination to the fair sex. Nicknamed "Amazing Grace" Hopper earned not just.
Interest in technology manifested in her childhood. Grace fell into the hands of an alarm clock - it was dismantled. Then another, and another - and so seven times. She managed to avoid the fate of his wife and a typical housewife: because his father could not provide a worthy daughter a dowry of serious illness, so decided to give it at least a decent education.
Grace Hopper received his Ph.D. from Yale University, and in 1943 went as a volunteer for the Navy. After training, she was sent to the office of artillery computing projects at Harvard University. Hopper became the third computer programmer Mark I, engaged in calculations of ballistic tables. To facilitate the work of operators and device to save them from having to constantly repeat the same action, Grace has developed routines that do this automatically.
Perhaps the most famous Grace Hopper creation - COBOL programming language. Until now, there are millions of lines of code are written annually. Hopper belongs and the term "bug" in the sense of "error". In September 1945, between the relay contacts computer Mark II was a moth. His extracted and pasted on the page technical journal with a mark First actual case of bug being found.
Marissa Mayer
